Barred by church custom from shedding blood, monks and university physicians left bleeding, tooth-pulling and amputation to barbers, who already kept razors sharp. London's barbers and surgeons were legally united into one guild in 1540, before the surgeons — by then better educated and better paid — successfully petitioned to split off as their own Company of Surgeons in 1745, ending the trade's centuries-long tie to haircutting.

Before hospitals routinely offered surgery, traveling "cutters for the stone" moved town to town removing bladder stones in a few brutal, unanesthetized minutes, sometimes in front of a paying audience. The most famous, French monk Frère Jacques Beaulieu, performed more than 5,000 such operations between roughly 1690 and 1719; the trade faded as hospital-based, formally trained surgeons and eventually safer techniques took over the work.

British law allowed anatomists to legally dissect only the bodies of executed murderers — fewer than 100 a year — far short of what a growing number of anatomy schools needed, so "resurrection men" dug up fresh graves and sold corpses to medical schools instead. The trade ended only after Edinburgh's Burke and Hare murdered at least sixteen people to sell as specimens in 1828, prompting Britain's Anatomy Act of 1832, which legalized the donation of unclaimed bodies.

For centuries a physician diagnosed and prescribed while a separate apothecary compounded and sold the remedy, a division European guilds enforced strictly to protect both trades' income. The plague doctor

Towns hit by recurring plague outbreaks hired physicians, sometimes with little formal training, specifically to treat the afflicted poor once established doctors fled; many wore the head-to-toe leather costume and beaked mask, stuffed with aromatic herbs, that French physician Charles de Lorme designed in 1619 to guard against 'bad air.' The role and its costume vanished once quarantine, sanitation and eventually germ theory brought epidemic plague under control in Europe.

'Leech' is Old English for healer, and the horse-leech was the untrained, apprenticeship-taught doctor of pre-scientific English horses, treating lameness and colic with bleeding and folk remedies. Knackers collected sick, dying or worn-out livestock for slaughter and rendering, and in the absence of any veterinary alternative effectively decided which animals were beyond saving. As animal-welfare and veterinary-licensing law tightened through the 19th and 20th centuries, that diagnostic judgment was reserved to licensed veterinarians, leaving the knacker's trade as regulated carcass disposal alone.

Before 'psychiatrist' became standard English usage, doctors who treated the insane were called alienists — from the French aliéné, meaning someone alienated from their own mind and society. The Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane, founded in 1844, only renamed itself the American Psychiatric Association in 1921, roughly tracking when the older term fell out of use.

A single physician often ran an entire custodial institution housing hundreds or thousands of patients, controlling admissions, discharge, staffing and daily routine with near-total authority. Deinstitutionalization from the 1960s onward, driven by antipsychotic drugs and shrinking public asylum budgets, dissolved most of these institutions and, with them, the role of running one.

Following Egas Moniz's original leucotomy, American neurologist Walter Freeman developed and toured the country performing a crude 'transorbital' version — driving an ice-pick-like instrument through the eye socket in minutes, often in outpatient settings without a surgeon present. Antipsychotic drugs, lawsuits and mounting evidence of permanent harm ended the practice almost entirely by the 1970s.

The serjeant-at-law

England's most elite legal order for centuries, serjeants-at-law held the exclusive right of audience before the Court of Common Pleas and wore a distinctive white coif; only a serjeant could become a judge of that court. The Judicature Acts of 1873–75 stripped away the order's monopoly, and the last surviving serjeant died in 1921, five decades after the order had already stopped admitting new members.

London's professional scriveners, organized from 1373 and formally chartered as the Worshipful Company of Scriveners in 1617, drafted deeds, bonds, wills and letters for clients who could not write elegant legal English themselves. Rising general literacy and the standardization of legal drafting inside solicitors' own offices absorbed the trade by the late nineteenth century.

Before typewriters, law offices employed rooms of clerks whose entire job was to hand-copy documents — contracts, pleadings, correspondence — in fair copy, a role famously fictionalized in Herman Melville's 1853 story Bartleby, the Scrivener. Mass adoption of the typewriter from the 1870s, followed by carbon paper and later photocopiers, eliminated the trade within a few decades.

Protected by a near-universal ancient taboo against harming a messenger, heralds carried declarations of war, truce offers and formal challenges between rulers who might otherwise have killed any other stranger crossing into hostile territory. As permanent embassies, written treaties and professional diplomats took over the messenger's function, the herald survived mainly as a ceremonial court title rather than a working diplomatic role.

Interpreter-diplomats fluent in Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian and European languages, dragomans were indispensable intermediaries for European embassies in Constantinople, often wielding real influence over negotiations their employers could not otherwise conduct. Rising European language training, consular reform and the Ottoman Empire's own dissolution after 1922 gradually eliminated the specialized, often hereditary dragoman families that had once controlled the role.

Before computers, every classified telegram or cable had to be hand-encrypted and hand-decrypted using codebooks and cipher machines by dedicated clerks working around the clock in embassy communications rooms. Electronic encryption and, later, computerized cable systems automated the work almost completely by the 1980s, eliminating a role once considered one of an embassy's most sensitive postings.

Before any public police force existed, theft victims in England paid private "thief-takers" a reward to recover stolen goods or catch the culprit — a system so easily corrupted that London's most notorious thief-taker, Jonathan Wild, secretly ran the theft rings he was paid to solve, until he was hanged in 1725. London's first semi-professional detective force, founded by magistrate Henry Fielding and expanded by his half-brother John, investigated crimes for a fee paid by victims or the court, alongside foot and horse patrols covering the city's main roads. Absorbed into the Metropolitan Police's growing detective branch through the 1830s, the Runners were formally disbanded in 1839, their functions folded into the new civil force.

Under the Statute of Winchester, every English parish had to supply an unpaid, rotating watchman — an ordinary tradesman or laborer serving a term of duty he neither trained for nor particularly wanted — to patrol at night and answer the hue and cry. Widely mocked as incompetent by the eighteenth century (Shakespeare's bumbling constable Dogberry drew directly on the type), the role disappeared once Peel's paid, trained constables took over the same streets.

Ancien-régime France leased the right to collect royal taxes to private financiers organized as the Ferme générale, who kept a cut and fronted the crown's revenue in advance — a role that concentrated enormous, resented private profit inside a public function. Mostly women, keypunch operators typed data and even program source code onto punched cards on machines like the IBM 026 and 029, one card per line of a program.
