Watchmaker · The craftsman who builds and revives the tiny machine on the wrist — a trade that survived the quartz crisis and now has more work than trained hands.

The watch is the miniaturization of the clock, and the watchmaker's history is the history of that shrinking act: from tower clocks with parts the size of a forearm to a machine that fits in a palm, then on a wrist, gaining accuracy at every step down. Each leap — the mainspring, the balance spring, the lever escapement, quartz — redefined who could do the work and what the work was worth.

It is also a history of geography. The trade was born in German free cities, industrialized in America, perfected in the Swiss Jura, nearly destroyed by Japanese electronics, and then rebuilt by Switzerland as a luxury craft. Few professions have been globalized, gutted and reinvented quite so completely while keeping the same bench, the same tweezers and essentially the same machine at the center of it.

Where it began

c. 1500–1530Nuremberg & Augsburg

Once the coiled mainspring replaced hanging weights as a power source in the fifteenth century, clocks could move — and locksmiths in the German free cities of Nuremberg and Augsburg shrank them into drum-shaped 'clock-watches' worn on the body. The Nuremberg locksmith Peter Henlein is the name tradition attaches to the breakthrough: the humanist Johann Cochläus wrote in 1511 that Henlein made iron watches, small enough for a purse, that ran forty hours. Henlein was certainly not alone, and the surviving 'Pomander watch' dated 1505 is disputed, but the trade's paper trail begins in his city.

1511Nuremberg's portable watches

The humanist Johann Cochläus records that locksmith Peter Henlein of Nuremberg makes small iron timepieces that run forty hours and can be carried in a purse — the earliest clear written evidence of watchmaking as a distinct craft. Early watches had only an hour hand and could drift by an hour or more a day; they were jewelry that happened to tell time.

1601Geneva founds the first watchmakers' guild

Jean Calvin's sumptuary laws had banned the wearing of jewelry in Geneva from the 1540s, pushing the city's goldsmiths and jewelers into the one luxury object still permitted: the useful watch. In 1601 Geneva's watchmakers organized what is generally counted as the world's first guild devoted purely to watchmaking, and the city became the trade's enduring capital.

1675Huygens adds the balance spring

Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens fits a spiral spring to the balance wheel, giving it a natural oscillation period for the first time. Accuracy improves from a fraction of an hour to a few minutes per day at a stroke, watches gain minute hands, and a bitter priority dispute with England's Robert Hooke — who had shown a spring-regulated balance years earlier — begins immediately.

1761Harrison's H4 solves longitude at sea

John Harrison's 1.4-kilogram watch H4 sails from Portsmouth to Jamaica aboard HMS Deptford and loses about five seconds in 81 days — accuracy that finally lets navigators compute longitude, the problem Britain's 1714 Longitude Act had priced at £20,000. The Board of Longitude resisted paying for years; Harrison received his final award in 1773, aged 80, after King George III took up his case.

1801Breguet patents the tourbillon

In Paris, Abraham-Louis Breguet patents the tourbillon, a rotating cage that carries the balance and escapement through all vertical positions to average out the errors gravity causes in a pocket watch. Commercially marginal for two centuries, it became the signature complication of the modern luxury revival — and a standard test piece for elite watchmakers ever since.

1854The American system reaches watchmaking

Aaron Lufkin Dennison and Edward Howard's factory — from 1854 established at Waltham, Massachusetts — applies the interchangeable-parts methods Dennison had admired at the Springfield Armory to watches. Machine-made Walthams undercut hand-fitted European work so badly that Swiss observers sent to the 1876 Philadelphia exhibition went home warning their industry to mechanize or die.

1926Rolex makes the wristwatch waterproof

Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf patents the screw-down Oyster case, and in October 1927 puts one on swimmer Mercedes Gleitze during a highly publicized English Channel swim attempt; the watch emerges running after more than ten hours in the water, and Wilsdorf buys the Daily Mail's front page to say so. The wristwatch — a soldiers' convenience of the First World War — becomes a serious instrument.

1969Seiko's Astron starts the quartz era

On 25 December 1969 in Tokyo, Seiko releases the Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch — accurate to about five seconds a month and priced at 450,000 yen, roughly the cost of a small car. Within a decade, mass-produced quartz movements are more accurate than the finest mechanical chronometers and cost almost nothing to make.

1970–1983The quartz crisis guts the Swiss industry

Swiss watch-industry employment collapses from roughly 90,000 in 1970 to under 35,000 by the mid-1980s, and well over half its firms disappear. The banks force the industry's two giant groups to merge under Nicolas Hayek, and in March 1983 the plastic, machine-assembled Swatch launches — profitable at a low price, and the cash engine that funds mechanical watchmaking's survival.

2019A wristwatch sells for CHF 31 million

At the Only Watch charity auction in Geneva on 9 November 2019, a unique steel Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime sells for CHF 31 million, the highest price ever paid for a wristwatch at auction. The result marks how completely the mechanical watch has been reinvented: technically obsolete for fifty years, and more valuable than at any time in its history.

c. 1500 – 1675

The watch escapes the clock tower

Mainspring power let locksmiths in Nuremberg and Augsburg shrink clocks into wearable drums and spheres, and the new craft spread through the German cities to France, Geneva and London. These verge-escapement watches could err by an hour a day, so the trade's value lay in goldsmithing and status as much as timekeeping; Calvin's ban on jewelry in Geneva accidentally built the future capital of the industry by forcing the city's jewelers into watchmaking.

1675 – 1800

The precision century

Huygens' balance spring made the watch a genuine scientific instrument, and the great prize of the age — computing longitude at sea — put watchmakers at the center of national strategy. England's Thomas Mudge invented the lever escapement around 1755, the design that still ticks in almost every mechanical watch; John Harrison's H4 won the sea trials; and in Paris, Breguet made the watch an object of engineering elegance for Europe's courts.

1800 – 1969

Factory time: America and the Swiss Jura

American factories at Waltham and Elgin proved watches could be mass-produced with interchangeable parts, forcing the Swiss to industrialize in response. The Jura valleys perfected a hybrid — machine-made blanks finished and assembled by networks of skilled workers — while the First World War moved the watch from pocket to wrist for good. By mid-century, Switzerland dominated the world's watch trade, employing around 90,000 people at the peak.

1969 – 1989

The quartz crisis

Seiko's Astron and the cheap quartz modules that followed made a century of accumulated mechanical craft commercially irrelevant within a decade. Two-thirds of Swiss watchmaking jobs vanished, schools emptied, and entire specialties — escapement makers, régleuses who hand-adjusted balance springs — nearly went extinct. Survival came through consolidation under Nicolas Hayek, the 1983 Swatch, and a dawning realization that the mechanical watch could be sold as craft rather than as a timekeeper.

1989 – present

The mechanical renaissance

Mechanical watchmaking returned as luxury: complications like the tourbillon became selling points, independent makers organized (the AHCI, founded 1985, gave lone craftsmen a stage), and auction prices climbed to the CHF 31 million Grandmaster Chime of 2019. The paradox of the era is industrial: smartwatches outsell all Swiss watches combined, yet brands cannot train watchmakers fast enough to service the mechanical watches people keep buying and inheriting.

Fusee chain maker

c. 1650–1900

Early mainsprings delivered uneven force, so watches used a fusee — a cone wound with a miniature chain of hundreds of hand-riveted links, each smaller than a grain of rice. Around Christchurch in southern England the chains were famously made by women and children, including workhouse children, paid piece rates for eye-destroying work. The going barrel and better springs made the fusee obsolete in watches by the late 1800s, and the trade vanished with it.

Knocker-up

c. 1800–1950s

In Britain and Ireland's industrial towns, a knocker-up walked the streets before dawn tapping bedroom windows with a long pole — or, famously in some accounts, shooting dried peas at them — to wake workers for their shifts, for a few pence a week per client. Cheap, reliable alarm clocks, a direct product of mass watch and clock manufacturing, erased the job; the last practitioners worked into the mid-twentieth century.

Radium dial painter

1917–1960s

Luminous watch dials created a factory trade of young women painting numerals with radium paint, trained to point the brush between their lips. At the United States Radium factory in Orange, New Jersey, and plants like it, the 'Radium Girls' developed horrific jaw necrosis and cancers; their 1927–28 lawsuits helped found modern occupational-safety law. Safer luminous compounds ended radium dial painting, and the trade with it.

The watchmaker's history is unusually circular. A trade born making expensive, inaccurate status objects for Renaissance courts spent four centuries perfecting accuracy, lost the accuracy contest overnight to a vibrating crystal, and went back to making expensive status objects — except that now the status lies precisely in the obsolete mechanism and the hands that can build it.

What survived every turn of that wheel is the bench itself: a person, a loupe, dressed tweezers and a machine of a hundred tiny parts that someone must understand completely. Quartz did not eliminate that person; it clarified what they were actually for.
