The maker of wooden wheels — hub, spokes and felloes fitted with shrunk-on iron tyres — was once every village's most exacting woodworker, combining carpentry, turning and smithing. George Sturt's 1923 memoir The Wheelwright's Shop documented the trade's last working generation in Farnham, England, just as the motor car and the pressed-steel wheel ended four thousand years of demand.
Wheelwright no longer exists as a living trade. Here is what erased it, and which profession took on the work.
The balloon frame and the machine
Steam sawmills, dimensional lumber and machine-made nails birthed Chicago's balloon frame in 1833, letting small crews raise houses fast — and letting factories absorb skills the site once owned. Carpenters answered by organizing: Peter J. McGuire founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1881, and the union became one of the most powerful in American labor history.
What else was happening then
New Orleans inventor Edmond Michel patented a handheld electric circular saw, commercialized through the company that became Skilsaw. Within a generation, hand-sawing framing lumber on site had essentially ended — the single largest productivity jump in the trade's modern history.
Florida builder A. Carroll Sanford developed the toothed steel connector plate behind the Gang-Nail truss, moving roof framing from skilled site work into factories. Today the overwhelming majority of new American and Australian house roofs arrive as prefabricated trusses on a truck.
The 85.4-metre Mjøstårnet tower opened in Brumunddal, Norway — then the world's tallest timber building — built of glulam and cross-laminated timber. Mass timber returned wood to commercial high-rise construction a century after steel and concrete had pushed it out, creating a new crane-and-CNC branch of the trade.

The builder in wood — a trade older than Homo sapiens, still measuring twice and cutting once from Nara's ancient temples to Norway's timber towers.

George Sturt's 1923 memoir The Wheelwright's Shop recorded the craft just as rubber-tyred motor vehicles ended it; by the 1950s working wheelwrights survived mainly in museums, and the tyring plate outside the smithy became an archaeological feature.
Steel, steam and the great collapse
Bessemer steel, drop forging, machine-cut nails and welded chain removed the smith's products one by one, and the automobile removed his best customer, the horse. The numbers tell the story brutally: from well over 200,000 American blacksmiths counted in 1910 to a few thousand by mid-century, with the same curve in every industrial country. The trades that fed on the forge — wheelwrights, nailers, hand chainmakers — died around it. What survived inside industry was the drop-forge operator and the toolroom; what survived outside it was the farrier and a scattering of ornamental shops.
What else was happening then
The Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America (ABANA) is founded at a gathering in Lumpkin, Georgia, in 1973, followed by the British Artist Blacksmiths Association in 1978. A trade that industry had discarded reorganises itself around design, sculpture and heritage restoration — the modern profession.
Where that work lives now
The trade that made every other trade's tools — from Hittite iron and guild forges to the artist-blacksmiths who brought the anvil back in the twenty-first century.
