Blacksmith · The trade that made every other trade's tools — from Hittite iron and guild forges to the artist-blacksmiths who brought the anvil back in the twenty-first century.

Iron was worked before it was smelted: the dagger buried with Tutankhamun around 1330 BCE was forged from meteoric iron, metal that fell from the sky and was valued above gold. The blacksmith's trade proper begins when people learned to pull iron out of ore in a charcoal furnace — a technology that appears in Anatolia in the second millennium BCE and then spreads across Eurasia and Africa, remaking agriculture and war wherever it lands.

For roughly three thousand years afterwards the story is remarkably stable: a forge, an anvil, a hammer, and a person at the centre of every settlement's economy. The rupture comes late and fast. Between Bessemer's converter in 1856 and the Model T in 1908, machines took nearly everything the smith sold, and a trade practiced by hundreds of thousands collapsed within two generations — then returned, transformed, as an art.

c. 1500 BCEAnatolia (Hittite lands)

The earliest secure evidence of regular iron smelting comes from Anatolia in the era of the Hittite Empire, in the centuries around 1500 BCE. Iron objects were traded as princely gifts — Hittite royal correspondence treats iron as a controlled, prestigious material — and the smelting and forging of the new metal spread widely after the empire's collapse around 1200 BCE. Working iron demanded something bronze never had: the smith, because iron cannot be usefully cast with ancient technology, only heated and hammered. The forge, the anvil and the person between them enter history together.

c. 1500 BCEIron smelting in Hittite Anatolia

Smiths in Anatolia begin smelting iron from ore in charcoal furnaces rather than relying on rare meteoric metal. Hittite kings treat the material as strategic and diplomatic treasure; a letter from king Hattusili III to an Assyrian counterpart discusses iron as a carefully rationed royal export.

c. 1200 BCEThe Iron Age spreads

After the Late Bronze Age collapse disrupts the tin trade that bronze depended on, ironworking spreads across the Mediterranean, Europe, India and, on separate lines of development, sub-Saharan Africa. Iron ore is nearly everywhere, so for the first time any village can afford a smith — and soon cannot function without one.

c. 300 BCEWootz: crucible steel in South India

Smiths in southern India and Sri Lanka begin producing wootz, a high-carbon crucible steel made by sealing iron and plant matter in clay crucibles. Traded in ingots across the Indian Ocean, it becomes the raw material of the patterned "Damascus" blades that Middle Eastern smiths forge for the next two thousand years.

c. 400 CEThe Delhi Iron Pillar

A forge-welded iron pillar over seven metres tall and about six tonnes is erected in India during the Gupta period, inscribed for a king identified with Chandragupta II. Built up from hundreds of hammer-welded blooms, it still stands in Delhi's Qutb complex, its high-phosphorus iron famously almost rust-free after 1,600 years.

c. 800–1000Ulfberht swords in Viking Europe

Around 170 surviving Viking Age swords carry the inlaid Frankish maker's mark +VLFBERH+T. The best are forged from unusually clean high-carbon steel, far better than most European metal of the era, and the mark was so valuable that misspelled counterfeits circulated — medieval brand piracy in steel.

1299London's blacksmiths enter the record

The fraternity that becomes the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths is first recorded in London in 1299, receiving a royal charter in 1571. Across medieval Europe, guilds fix prices, inspect work, train apprentices and bury their dead — turning the smithy into a regulated, inheritable trade.

c. 1300Masamune forges in Kamakura Japan

In Sagami province, the swordsmith Gorō Nyūdō Masamune perfects the forging and differential hardening of tamahagane steel, producing blades whose crystalline temper lines are still considered the summit of the Japanese sword. His tradition of named, revered master smiths continues unbroken in Japan today.

1856Bessemer makes steel industrial

Henry Bessemer's converter, announced in 1856, blows air through molten iron to make cheap steel by the ton. Combined with rolling mills and drop forges, it moves metalworking decisively from the anvil to the factory: within decades, nails, chain, tools and hardware — the smith's bread and butter — are machine-made.

1908The Model T empties the smithy

The US census counted well over 200,000 blacksmiths in 1910, most of them shoeing horses and repairing wagons. The automobile removed the horse from working life within a generation, and by mid-century the American village smithy was effectively extinct — a collapse repeated across the industrial world.

1973The artist-blacksmith revival

The Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America (ABANA) is founded at a gathering in Lumpkin, Georgia, in 1973, followed by the British Artist Blacksmiths Association in 1978. A trade that industry had discarded reorganises itself around design, sculpture and heritage restoration — the modern profession.

The Iron Age smith

Once smelting spread, iron democratised metal: ore was local, so every region could raise a smith, and the smith's furnace and hammer set the ceiling on what farmers could plough and armies could field. The work carried an aura of controlled danger — Greek myth gave the forge to Hephaestus, the only Olympian who labours; Yoruba tradition gave it to Ogun, who opens the road for all other work; many African societies held smiths in a special caste, feared and indispensable at once. India's wootz steel and the six-tonne Delhi pillar show how far the craft's frontier had already moved by late antiquity.

500 – 1500

Guilds and the village forge

Medieval Europe organised smithing twice over: in the countryside, the village smith shod horses, mended ploughs and made hinges, nails and knives for everyone within walking distance; in towns, guilds like London's blacksmiths — recorded from 1299 — regulated training, quality and prices, and split off specialists such as cutlers, locksmiths and armourers. The smithy doubled as the village's news exchange and its fire source. Elsewhere the craft reached extraordinary refinement: Japanese swordsmiths of the Kamakura period, Masamune above all, made blades that were simultaneously weapons, religious objects and the highest art their society produced.

1500 – 1850

The forge at the economy's centre

Pre-industrial economies ran on wrought iron, and the smith was its retail interface: ships, mills, coaches, farms and armies all ended at somebody's anvil. The trade specialised and stratified — anchor smiths, chainmakers, nailers, farriers, whitesmiths — and master smiths of ornamental iron, like Jean Tijou at St Paul's Cathedral, worked at the level of court artists. In the American colonies the blacksmith was often the first tradesman a new settlement recruited; in the Black Country of England, whole districts forged nothing but nails or chain, a hand industry employing tens of thousands.

1850 – 1960

Steel, steam and the great collapse

Bessemer steel, drop forging, machine-cut nails and welded chain removed the smith's products one by one, and the automobile removed his best customer, the horse. The numbers tell the story brutally: from well over 200,000 American blacksmiths counted in 1910 to a few thousand by mid-century, with the same curve in every industrial country. The trades that fed on the forge — wheelwrights, nailers, hand chainmakers — died around it. What survived inside industry was the drop-forge operator and the toolroom; what survived outside it was the farrier and a scattering of ornamental shops.

1960 – present

The artist-blacksmith revival

Just as the last village smithies closed, the craft came back through the art school and the museum. Europeans such as Fritz Kühn in Berlin and Alfred Habermann in Czechoslovakia treated forged iron as sculpture; ABANA's founding in 1973 and Britain's BABA in 1978 organised a new profession of artist-blacksmiths; Hereford in England built degree-level forge education. Heritage bodies began paying for like-for-like restoration of historic ironwork, and from 2015 the television contest Forged in Fire and YouTube forge channels drove the biggest wave of new smiths in a century — hobbyists first, professionals out of the best of them.

Hand nailer

c. 1600–1900

Whole districts — Bromsgrove and the Black Country in England, similar villages across Europe — lived by forging nails by hand at backyard hearths, whole families cutting and heading rod iron for piecework wages that were a byword for poverty. Machine-cut nails, and then cheap wire nails in the late nineteenth century, erased the trade almost completely by 1900; the nailers' cottages, with forge shops behind the kitchen, still stand around Bromsgrove.

Hand chainmaker

c. 1820–1970

Cradley Heath in England's Black Country hand-forged much of the world's chain, from ships' anchor cable made by gangs of men to small chain hammered by thousands of women in backyard shops. In 1910 around 800 of those women, organised by Mary Macarthur, won a ten-week strike that roughly doubled their pay under Britain's first minimum-wage law. Machine-welded chain then took the trade anyway; the last hand shops closed in the decades after the Second World War.

Wheelwright

Antiquity–1950s

The wheelwright built the wooden wheel; the smith closed the partnership by forging its iron tyre and shrinking it red-hot onto the rim, a two-trade ritual performed in every market town for centuries. George Sturt's 1923 memoir The Wheelwright's Shop recorded the craft just as rubber-tyred motor vehicles ended it; by the 1950s working wheelwrights survived mainly in museums, and the tyring plate outside the smithy became an archaeological feature.

Trades that vanished →

The blacksmith's history is unusual among the trades on this site: it contains a near-extinction. Between 1850 and 1950 machines took not part of the work but almost all of it, and the profession survived only by abandoning production and keeping what machines could not hold — design, restoration, the one-off.

That is worth remembering whenever automation is discussed as a future event. For this trade it is a historical one, with a documented aftermath: smaller numbers, higher meaning, and a hammer that has not changed shape in three thousand years.
