Genetic counseling emerged when laboratory discoveries began producing personal knowledge before medicine always had a cure. The profession built a bridge between genetic facts and the people whose families had to live with them.

Its history includes the first training program, professional certification, the Human Genome Project and the sequencing era that made testing routine while multiplying uncertain results.

Where it began

1940s–1960sUnited States and United Kingdom

Medical genetics clinics began pairing inheritance advice with family-history work as chromosome analysis and newborn screening expanded. The modern profession crystallized when Sarah Lawrence College created a master's program in 1969, explicitly joining genetics education to counseling practice.

c. 1900–1945

Early heredity advice was often entangled with coercive eugenics, including forced sterilization. Modern counseling explicitly rejects this legacy through informed consent and non-directiveness.

For decades many clinical questions relied chiefly on visible chromosome analysis; molecular tests and sequencing absorbed much of this narrower role.

Paper pedigree archivist

1960s–2000s

Hand-drawn family trees were once the only practical record. Digital records changed the medium, though careful pedigree interviewing remains essential.
