Professions are not permanent. Some are older than writing, some are younger than the smartphone. Here is every job on this site placed on a single timeline, by the moment it first became a distinct thing a person could be.
Egypt's Edwin Smith Papyrus, a roughly 1600 BCE copy of a much older document some scholars connect to the Old Kingdom physician-official Imhotep (c. 2650 BCE), examines 48 real trauma cases in a strict format — examination, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis — including injuries its author frankly labels "an ailment not to be treated." Mesopotamia codified the trade rather than just describing it: Hammurabi's Code, around 1754 BCE, set a surgeon's fee on a sliding scale by the patient's social class and ordered a surgeon's hand cut off for a fatal error.
Imhotep, chancellor to the pharaoh Djoser, designed the Step Pyramid at Saqqara by stacking six mastaba tombs of decreasing size — the first large cut-stone building in history, and the point at which a single named individual, rather than an anonymous royal workshop, is credited with a monument's design. Djoser broke royal convention by having Imhotep's name and titles carved beside his own on the pyramid's enclosure wall. Imhotep was deified within a few centuries of his death and worshipped for two more millennia as a god of wisdom, medicine and building — Egyptians, and later Greeks who identified him with Asclepius, were still leaving him offerings at Saqqara more than two thousand years later.
The Kahun Veterinary Papyrus, unearthed in 1889 by archaeologist Flinders Petrie in the Middle Kingdom town of Kahun, is the oldest known veterinary text in the world — older than any comparable human-medicine papyrus. An unnamed priest-healer describes three eye diseases and a case of intestinal worms in cattle, giving each a name, its symptoms, a prognosis and a treatment, the same structure a veterinary case write-up still follows more than 3,800 years later. The surviving fragment even instructs the healer on how to keep the animal comfortable if the treatment fails — the first recorded acknowledgment that a veterinary patient's comfort matters even when a cure does not.
The oldest written recipes anywhere are three Akkadian cuneiform tablets in Yale University's Babylonian Collection, dated to around 1730 BCE. They record stews and broths in technical shorthand — terse, assuming the reader already knows the basics — that historians read as professional notes rather than home instructions: written for cooks who prepared food for temples and royal tables, not for a family kitchen.
Diplomatic correspondence is visible at scale for the first time in the Amarna letters — roughly 380 cuneiform tablets excavated from Akhetaten, the short-lived capital of Pharaoh Akhenaten. Written mostly in Akkadian, the era's diplomatic lingua franca, they record Egyptian pharaohs exchanging gifts, marriage proposals and grievances with the rulers of Babylon, Assyria, Mitanni and the Hittites — addressing each other as royal "brothers" in a system built on reciprocal gift-giving rather than formal treaties.
Athenian law required litigants to plead their own cases in person, but nothing stopped a wealthy or unskilled litigant from paying someone else to write the speech they then delivered as their own. Antiphon of Rhamnus, active from around 430 BCE, is the first such 'logographer' known by name and the earliest surviving Greek prose author — his surviving speeches, written for clients to memorize and perform, are effectively the first written legal briefs in Western history, even though Antiphon himself never appeared in court to argue them.
Hippocrates of Kos and his followers produced the Hippocratic Corpus, roughly sixty texts arguing that disease came from natural, bodily causes — an imbalance of humors — rather than the anger of gods, and that a physician's job was to observe it methodically. The Epidemics books record individual patient histories almost day by day, including the case of Philiscus, who lived by the town wall at Thasos and died on the sixth day of a fever the text tracks symptom by symptom — one of the earliest detailed clinical case notes in Western medicine. Not every text in the Corpus was written by Hippocrates himself, but the collection fixed his name to the idea that medicine should be a rational craft, not a religious one.
Aristotle's History of Animals, compiled from his own dissections and observations around 350 BCE, describes roughly 500 animal species by structure, behavior and reproduction, and organizes them by shared traits in a way later naturalists recognized as a genuine precursor to classification. His student Theophrastus did the same for plants in Enquiry into Plants, and together the two works stayed the most complete biological reference in Europe for close to two thousand years.
Augustus created Rome's vigiles in 6 CE, seven cohorts of freedmen who patrolled the city by night watching for fires and thieves under a praefectus vigilum — the closest the ancient world came to a standing, salaried police force. Medieval England took a communal path instead: the Anglo-Saxon tithing system bound groups of households to keep the peace and raise the "hue and cry" after a wrongdoer, formalized into a parish watch-and-ward duty by the 1285 Statute of Winchester, which remained the basic model of English law enforcement for over five centuries.
At Bell Telephone Laboratories, physicists John Bardeen and Walter Brattain demonstrate a working point-contact transistor, amplifying an electrical signal using a sliver of germanium and two gold contacts instead of a bulky, power-hungry vacuum tube. Their colleague William Shockley, unhappy at being left out of the initial demonstration, develops a more practical junction-transistor design within weeks; the three share the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics. Bell Labs delays public announcement until June 1948, and it takes years before anyone fully grasps that this small lab bench had just replaced the vacuum tube as the basis of modern electronics.
China's Sui dynasty replaced hereditary and recommendation-based appointment with a written examination for government office: Emperor Wen began the shift around 587 CE, and his son Emperor Yang formalized the jinshi ('presented scholar') degree in 605, testing candidates on classical texts, statecraft and composition largely regardless of family background. It predates Britain's first competitive civil-service examinations by roughly twelve and a half centuries.
The Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital, built in Cairo in 872, is among the earliest documented hospitals to include a dedicated section for people with mental illness, treated alongside other patients rather than confined separately as criminals or outcasts. Bimaristans across the medieval Islamic world — in Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo — offered patients music, occupation and rest as treatment, a model of care centuries ahead of the chained wards that would later define European asylums.
George Cayley, a baronet with no formal engineering training, engraves a silver disc with a diagram identifying the four forces that act on any flying object — lift, drag, weight and thrust — and sketches a fixed-wing glider with a separate tail for stability, breaking decisively from centuries of failed attempts to imitate a flapping bird. He goes on to build and fly a series of gliders, reportedly sending his coachman aloft in 1853 in the first recorded flight of a heavier-than-air craft carrying an adult, and is now generally credited as the founder of aerodynamics as a science.
Ada Lovelace, translating an Italian engineer's paper on Charles Babbage's unbuilt Analytical Engine, adds a set of notes longer than the original text. The last of them, Note G, lays out step by step how the machine would compute a sequence of numbers — an algorithm written for a computer that would not exist for another century, and the point most historians mark as the conceptual birth of programming: the idea that a machine's instructions could be designed, written down and checked as a thing separate from the machine itself.
In a 1955 funding proposal to the Rockefeller Foundation, mathematician John McCarthy and three co-authors — Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester and Claude Shannon — coined the phrase 'artificial intelligence' to describe a summer workshop they wanted to hold, built on the conjecture that every aspect of learning could in principle be so precisely described that a machine could be made to simulate it. The Rockefeller Foundation funded only about half of the requested $14,000. Roughly ten researchers gathered at Dartmouth for about eight weeks that summer; the meeting produced no single technical breakthrough, but the deliberately chosen name — and the field it named — outlived everything actually discussed there.
