Rheinmetall began in 1889 under Heinrich Ehrhardt as a Ruhr-area metals and munitions works. It grew with German rearmament before 1914 and again in the 1930s -- a firm file that includes the Nazi-era armaments economy and the 1945 collapse. This page will not turn those years into a production lesson. It will name them as dated industrial history beside Krupp and other Ruhr names.
The postwar legal and political break matters: West German rearmament from 1955-56 (Bundeswehr, NATO) brought the firm back as a land-systems supplier -- guns, then vehicles, then electronics. The Rh-120 smoothbore is the English hobby-and-staff-college name; Leopard 2 is the vehicle everyone photographs. Armin Papperger is the late public CEO of the 2010s-20s export and "Zeitenwende" years after Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine recast German defence budgets.

Rheinmetall is a continuity of place and metal with a political discontinuity in 1945 -- then a NATO supplier, then a 2020s headline.
Ehrhardt's works, the First World War munitions economy, Weimar contraction, and Nazi-era expansion are one long Ruhr sentence. Forced labour in the second war is part of the ledger, as with other German armaments firms.
No recipe from those factories will be copied here.
