Becoming a research mathematician is one of the longest apprenticeships outside medicine, but its cost structure is the reverse of most elite professions: nearly every mathematics PhD in the world is funded, with tuition waived and a stipend or salary paid, because departments need doctoral students to teach and the field long ago decided talent should not depend on wealth. The price is paid in time and in odds, not tuition.
The pipeline narrows brutally at the end. Universities in the US alone graduate roughly 1,900 mathematics PhDs a year, while permanent research posts open at a small fraction of that rate; several years of fixed-term postdoctoral positions, often across two or three countries, are now the norm before any permanent job. The consolation is a strong exit market: the same training is prized in finance, technology and government at salaries academia cannot match.
Strong school mathematics, and for many future researchers a first taste of real proof through olympiad culture — the International Mathematical Olympiad has run since 1959, and national training camps in countries like China, Russia, Iran and the US have produced a striking share of later Fields medalists. Competitions help but are not required; plenty of top researchers were never olympians.

The undergraduate degree pivots on the first proof-based courses — real analysis and abstract algebra — where memorization stops working and most students discover whether they can actually construct arguments. The only real tuition bill is the undergraduate degree: near-zero in Germany, France, the Nordic countries and Argentina, but $200,000–$300,000-plus at private US universities. Mathematics PhDs are almost universally funded — US stipends ran roughly $25,000–$45,000 in 2024 with tuition waived, and in much of Europe doctoral researchers are salaried employees. The true cost is a decade of below-market earnings and the risk of the academic bottleneck at the end.
