Mathematician · From Babylonian scribes to Fields medalists and AI-assisted proof: the profession that turns hard questions into permanent certainty, one theorem at a time.

No profession carries a heavier mythology of genius. The public image of the mathematician — solitary, otherworldly, possibly mad — was built from real material (Newton's obsessions, Gödel's paranoia, Perelman's refusals) but describes almost none of the tens of thousands of working mathematicians who teach classes, referee papers and pick their children up from school. The culture inside the field is in fact unusually collective: seminars, tea rooms, co-authorship webs and a shared, half-ironic reverence for chalk.

Status has swung more violently than in most professions. The same discipline that Plato put over his Academy's door as a condition of entry spent the European Middle Ages ranked beneath law, medicine and theology, and its practitioners paid the rent by casting horoscopes. The modern prestige of the mathematician — genius surveys, film Oscars, million-dollar prizes — is barely a century and a half old.

Babylonian and Egyptian calculators belonged to the small literate elite that ran taxation, land division and grain stores; a skilled scribe was a respected administrator with secure status, though the mathematics itself was a tool of office rather than a title to fame.

Classical Greece

Geometry became the badge of the philosophical elite — tradition says Plato's Academy bore the inscription "Let no one ignorant of geometry enter" — and mathematikoi formed the Pythagoreans' inner circle. Yet there were almost no paid posts: Greek mathematics was mostly done by men of leisure or philosophers' pupils.

Medieval Europe

In the university hierarchy, mathematics sat in the preparatory arts faculty beneath theology, law and medicine; the working mathematicians of the era were reckoning masters teaching merchants' arithmetic, or court astrologers whose science was valued mainly for forecasting. Status was modest and often suspect.

Scientific revolution to 19th century

Royal academies in Paris, Berlin and St Petersburg paid real salaries, and mathematics became the language of the new physics. Newton was knighted in 1705 and buried in Westminster Abbey with honors that astonished Voltaire; Euler was courted by two empires; Gauss was celebrated across Europe as the "prince of mathematicians."

20th century – present

The Fields Medal (1936), the Abel Prize (2003) and the Clay million-dollar problems gave the field public trophies, and the genius archetype — Einstein's spillover fame, Nash's Oscar-winning biopic, Ramanujan's legend — keeps prestige high even though median pay is far below medicine or law. "Mathematician" regularly tops best-jobs surveys.

Mathematics is the queen of the sciences.

The phrase carries the field's double claim: it serves every science while remaining sovereign, answerable only to proof.

Latin, translating the Greek formula Euclid used to end proofs"Which was to be demonstrated" — the words that close a completed proof, used continuously for over two thousand years. Modern papers often end with a small square instead (the "tombstone" or Halmos symbol), but the meaning is unchanged: the claim is now permanent.

Chalk, blackboards and the cult of Hagoromo

Long after every other profession went digital, mathematicians defend the blackboard as the honest pace of thought. The Japanese chalk Hagoromo — nicknamed "the chalk of the gods" — inspired such devotion that when its maker announced closure in 2014, mathematicians worldwide hoarded lifetime supplies and a South Korean company bought the formula and machines to keep production alive.

The Erdős number

The community measures its own connectedness by collaborative distance from Paul Erdős, the itinerant Hungarian who wrote roughly 1,500 papers with more than 500 co-authors while living out of a suitcase. An Erdős number of 1 means you wrote with him; 2 means you wrote with someone who did. Part joke, part genuine badge, it encodes the field's real social structure: mathematics is a web of co-authorship.

The ICM and the Fields ceremony

Every four years the International Congress of Mathematicians gathers thousands of researchers, and the Fields Medals — restricted to mathematicians under forty — are presented at the opening, traditionally by the host country's head of state. An invitation to lecture at the ICM is itself a career honor; the congress functions as the profession's coronation, census and family reunion at once.

The rituals all point the same way: a profession with no laboratories, no licenses and no uniforms builds its identity instead from shared tools, shared ancestors and a co-authorship graph that makes the whole field one extended workshop.

The genius myth will not disappear — publishers and filmmakers need it. But the working culture underneath it is closer to a craft guild: apprenticeship under an advisor, technique passed personally from hand to hand, and status measured by what you added to a structure twenty-five centuries in the building.
