Biology has one of the least standardized entry paths of any research profession: there is no single license or board exam, and what counts as "qualified" depends heavily on whether the destination is an industry lab, a field conservation role, or an independent university research position.

What is consistent almost everywhere is the shape of the academic route: an undergraduate degree, a PhD built around original research, and typically several years of postdoctoral work proving that research can be done independently before a permanent position opens up. Industry and field-conservation paths can be considerably shorter.

    Undergraduate degree in biology or a related science

    Foundational coursework in cell biology, genetics, ecology, chemistry and statistics, usually including a first taste of hands-on research in an undergraduate lab or field placement.

Cost of entry $0 – $60k+

In the UK, most of continental Europe and much of Asia, PhD programs are funded and often tuition-free, so the direct cost is close to zero — the real cost is years spent on a below-market stipend rather than debt. In the United States, PhD programs are also typically funded through teaching or research assistantships, but unfunded master's degrees and the years of low postdoctoral pay that follow can still leave total training costs in the tens of thousands.

The broadest, most common foundation

Covers cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution and physiology together, keeping subfield options open before specializing at the graduate level; the single most common undergraduate degree feeding biology PhD programs.

Biochemistry / Molecular Biology

For lab-based, genetic and molecular research

Concentrates on the chemistry of living systems, giving strong grounding for careers in genetics, cell biology, pharmaceutical research and the wet-lab techniques central to today's molecular biology.

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

For field-based, organismal and environmental research
