For most of history, studying living things for its own sake — rather than for medicine, farming or hunting — was a pastime for people who did not need to earn a living any other way. That began changing only once natural history became fashionable enough, and later professional enough, for status to attach to the pursuit itself rather than just to the wealth that allowed for it.

The culture that grew up around biology says almost as much about the profession as the science itself: the Victorian craze for pressed ferns and pinned beetles, the ritual of formally naming a new species in Latin, the lab coat borrowed from Pasteur's germ-conscious laboratories, and a shelf of proverbs about patience, evidence and the slowness of nature's own workings.

Classical antiquity

Aristotle and other natural philosophers held real intellectual standing, but the physical work of dissection and specimen handling ranked below the more prestigious, purely theoretical branches of philosophy and medicine.

Medieval Europe

Natural history survived mainly through herbals and monastery gardens, tied closely to practical medicine rather than valued as independent knowledge; it carried little status of its own, subordinate to theology and inherited classical texts.

The Victorian naturalist craze (c. 1830–1900)

The field notebook

Field biologists still keep meticulous, dated, hand-written notebooks recording exactly what was observed, where and when, a discipline traced to methods Joseph Grinnell formalized at Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology in the early 1900s and still taught to ecology and wildlife students as the "Grinnell system" today.

Every one of these rituals is really making the same argument: that biology's authority rests on careful, checkable, shared record-keeping — a name properly published, a notebook properly dated, a claim properly tested — rather than on any individual's reputation alone.

That discipline rarely photographs as well as a dramatic operation or a courtroom verdict, which may be exactly why filmmakers keep reaching instead for dinosaurs, cloning and gene editing whenever they want to put biology on screen.
