Classical antiquity
Aristotle and other natural philosophers held real intellectual standing, but the physical work of dissection and specimen handling ranked below the more prestigious, purely theoretical branches of philosophy and medicine.
Medieval Europe
Natural history survived mainly through herbals and monastery gardens, tied closely to practical medicine rather than valued as independent knowledge; it carried little status of its own, subordinate to theology and inherited classical texts.
