Physics pay is genuinely bimodal: a physics PhD who stays in academia can expect a modest, if stable, salary for years as a postdoc before ever competing for a permanent position, while the same degree, applied to quantitative finance or the technology industry, routinely pays several times as much.
Demand also runs on two tracks. The number of tenure-track academic positions has grown only slowly for decades, while industries that value physicists' mathematical training — semiconductors, quantum computing, machine learning, finance — have expanded hiring briskly, absorbing a majority of new PhDs who do not stay in a university.

Where the demand is going
The academic bottleneck is well documented and long-standing: US institutions award roughly 1,800 physics PhDs a year against a few hundred new tenure-track openings, and the ratio has not meaningfully improved in decades, pushing the large majority of graduates toward industry, government labs or careers only loosely connected to physics research.
Outside academia, demand is genuinely strong and growing: the semiconductor industry, quantum computing startups and AI research labs all actively recruit physics PhDs for their mathematical modeling and problem-solving training, often paying considerably more than an equivalent academic position ever would.
