Mountain Guide · The certified professional who leads strangers up — and above all back down — the world's great mountains, a trade Chamonix organized in 1821.

Clients assume the guide's core skill is climbing. It is not: by the time someone holds a carnet, personal climbing is taken for granted. The profession's real skill is moving a weaker person through dangerous terrain on a schedule set by weather — an unbroken stream of small decisions about snow, rock, rope length, pace and turnaround, most of them invisible to the client precisely when they are made well.

The craft splits into two halves that must never separate: hazard judgment, which decides where and when to go, and rope craft, which controls the consequences when something slips anyway. A guide who is brilliant at one and weak at the other is dangerous in a way no exam fully catches — which is why every national system tests both, for years, in real terrain.

Reading a face, a glacier or a snow slope and choosing the line — and the moment — that keeps the party out of the way of what the mountain does daily.

Avalanche & weather assessment

Turning bulletins, snow profiles and sky into a go, no-go or reroute decision every winter morning, with the bad calls measured in burials.

  1. 3–5 Alpine start

    Up before the clients in the hut's dark dining room: check the forecast and avalanche bulletin one last time, feel the overnight refreeze, and make the day's first and biggest decision — go, wait, or change objective.

  2. 5–11 The ascent

    Roped and moving by headlamp to beat the daytime warming that loosens rockfall and softens snow bridges. The guide sets the pace deliberately slow and even, navigates, and re-times the plan at every checkpoint.

  3. 11–14 Turnaround and descent

    Summit or not, the turnaround time is held: most accidents happen on the way down, on tired legs in softening snow. Short-roping on the exposed ground, the guide stays uphill, attention fully spent on the client's feet.

  4. 14–17 Valley return and debrief

    Back to the valley or the next hut: clients fed and debriefed, ropes dried, gear checked and repaired, the day's conditions reported to colleagues — guides' condition networks are the trade's living database.

  5. 17–20 Tomorrow's plan

    Forecast study, hut and lift bookings, messages to next week's clients, accounts. A self-employed guide's evening admin decides whether next season has enough booked days to pay the year's bills.

  6. 20–3 Early night

    Sleep comes early because the alarm is set for 2:45. In high season a guide may repeat this cycle six days a week, and the discipline of actually resting is itself a professional skill.

Short-roping: the guide's signature

On exposed but moderate ground the guide keeps the client on two to four meters of rope, hand-carrying coils, positioned uphill, moving in step — close enough to arrest a stumble the instant it starts rather than catch a fall after it accelerates. It looks casual and is anything but: aspirants drill it for years, and examiners fail candidates on centimeters of slack.

Munter's 3×3 filter

Swiss guide Werner Munter reduced avalanche decision-making to a discipline: assess conditions, terrain and the human group at three scales — planning at home, arriving in the region, standing on the individual slope — and let the slope-scale answer override everything decided earlier. His framework and reduction method reshaped European avalanche education and remain the backbone of guides' winter planning.

The turnaround time is set in the valley

The hour at which the party turns back is fixed the evening before, when judgment is calm, not on the summit ridge, where ambition negotiates. Everest guiding made the rule famous — Rob Hall preached a rigid early-afternoon turnaround, and died in 1996 having broken it for a client — but every Alpine guide runs the same discipline on every route.

The guide's pace

Start insultingly slow and never stop: an even, breathing-matched pace that looks lazy in the first hour delivers the client to the summit with reserves for the descent, while an enthusiastic start burns them out by mid-morning. The classic manuals codified what Chamonix guides had practiced for a century — the party's speed is set by its weakest member's lungs, managed from the front.

One at a time between islands of safety

In avalanche terrain the exposure is managed like traffic: the group crosses a suspect slope one person at a time, spaced, moving between ridges, rock outcrops and dense trees — pre-identified islands where the snow cannot bury them — so a release catches at most one body, watched by rescuers with beacons already switched to search.

Learn the descent on the way up

Good guides climb with their heads turned around: memorizing how the route reads in reverse, noting the bearing at each junction, the time between landmarks, where the rappel anchors are — because the descent will be made on tired legs, in afternoon snow, possibly in cloud, and the mountain looks entirely different facing down.

Tools of the trade

Dynamic rope

The defining tool since the trade began — first hemp, now stretch-engineered nylon that absorbs a fall's energy. How a guide shortens, coils and carries the rope between full pitches and short-roping is a signature of their training.

Ice axe & crampons

The tools that opened the glaciers: steel points for boots and a pick for the hand, descended from the alpenstocks and hobnails of the first Chamonix guides, still the non-negotiable equipment of every snow and ice route.

Avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel

The winter trinity carried by guide and every client: a radio beacon to find a burial, a probe to pinpoint it, a shovel to dig. Guides drill companion rescue until it runs under three minutes, because survival odds collapse after fifteen.

Map, altimeter and GPS

Whiteout navigation is a certified, examined skill: paper map and altimeter watch remain the backbone, now layered with GPS mapping apps and slope-angle overlays that turn route planning into avalanche risk management.

Satellite communicator and radio

Two-way satellite messengers and VHF radios connect parties beyond phone coverage to weather updates and rescue services — the technology that most changed expedition guiding since the 1990s, and the last line when judgment fails.

How people fail at it

The heuristic traps

Ian McCammon's 2004 analysis of more than 700 US avalanche accidents found trained people die in familiar terrain, in larger groups, chasing scarce powder — killed by mental shortcuts he labeled familiarity, expert halo, social proof and scarcity. Guides are not exempt; several of the studied parties contained the most experienced person on the slope that day.

Selling summits instead of judgment

The client has paid, flown in, and has three days; the weather window is marginal. Economic pressure to deliver the objective — sharpest in commercial expedition guiding, as the 1996 Everest disaster showed — is the profession's structural hazard, and resisting it is what separates a guide from a booking agent with a rope.

Cumulative exposure and the worn body

A guide crosses avalanche terrain hundreds of days a season for decades, and the actuarial arithmetic never sleeps: Alpine associations lose members most years. Add ruined knees, frostbite, hearing worn by wind, and income that stops the day the body does — an honest reason many guides pivot to instruction, forecasting or rescue management in their fifties.
