Farmer · The profession that made every other one possible — feeding the world for eleven millennia, from the first Fertile Crescent wheat to autonomous tractors.

Farming is the hardest profession to write a legends list for, because its greatest achievement — the domestication of every crop and animal we eat — was accomplished by people whose names were never recorded, over thousands of years, largely by women in Neolithic villages. Every name below stands on that anonymous foundation.

The eight chosen span twenty-five centuries and six countries: a Roman farmer-statesman, an English livestock breeder, two Americans who taught and irrigated, a children's author turned prize-winning shepherd, and the three twentieth-century figures whose plants and methods now feed billions. Each left the profession measurably different from how they found it.

Cincinnatus

Roman Republic · c. 519 – c. 430 BCE

A patrician reduced to farming a few acres across the Tiber, Cincinnatus became Western culture's defining image of the citizen-farmer: the man who holds absolute power only as long as duty requires, then goes back to his plough. The story, told by Livy, made farming synonymous with civic virtue for two millennia.

The story

In 458 BCE, with a Roman army trapped by the Aequi on Mount Algidus, the Senate's envoys found Cincinnatus ploughing his small farm. He sent his wife for his toga, accepted the dictatorship, defeated the Aequi, and resigned after roughly fifteen days of a six-month term to return to his fields. George Washington was celebrated as the American Cincinnatus for likewise surrendering power, and the veterans' Society of the Cincinnati — from which Cincinnati, Ohio takes its name — was founded on the ideal in 1783.

Robert Bakewell

England · 1725–1795

Working his family's Dishley Grange farm in Leicestershire, Bakewell was the first to breed livestock systematically — selecting for measured traits, mating close relatives to fix them, and keeping records. His New Leicester sheep and Improved Longhorn cattle spread worldwide, and his methods influenced Charles Darwin's thinking on selection.

The story

Instead of selling his best rams, Bakewell rented them out by the season — an innovation that let him track offspring quality across many flocks while keeping his genetics under control through the Dishley Society he founded in 1783. The scheme made his animals famous and his farm rich: by 1789 his ram lettings reportedly earned some 1,200 guineas in a single season, at a time when a farm laborer earned perhaps 20 pounds a year. Breeders travelled from across Europe to see how he did it.

George Washington Carver

United States · c. 1864–1943

Born into slavery in Missouri and the first Black student at Iowa State, Carver led Tuskegee Institute's agriculture department for 47 years. He taught the South's poorest farmers to rescue cotton-exhausted soils by rotating with nitrogen-fixing peanuts and sweet potatoes, then catalogued hundreds of uses for the new crops to guarantee them a market.

The story

In January 1921, Carver was granted ten minutes before the US House Ways and Means Committee to explain why the peanut industry deserved tariff protection. Demonstrating food after food made from peanuts, he so absorbed the initially dismissive committee that the chairman told him to take all the time he wanted; he spoke for well over an hour and left to applause. Just as characteristic was his Jesup wagon — a horse-drawn mobile classroom he designed in 1906 to carry demonstrations directly to sharecroppers who could never attend college.

Harriet Williams Russell Strong

United States · 1844–1926

Widowed in 1883 with four daughters and her late husband's mining debts, Strong took over the family's 220-acre Rancho del Fuerte near Whittier, California, and planted walnuts, pampas grass and citrus. She became known as the Walnut Queen of Southern California, patented water-storage dam designs, and was the first woman elected to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.

The story

Farming a dry ranch made Strong an engineer: her 1887 patent proposed a sequence of dams built one above another so each reservoir braced the next, storing floodwater for irrigation, and a second patent followed in 1894. The designs won two awards at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and in 1918 she testified before Congress advocating dams on the Colorado River for irrigation and flood control — over a decade before construction of what became Hoover Dam began.

Beatrix Potter

United Kingdom · 1866–1943

The creator of Peter Rabbit spent her royalties on a second, entirely serious career: Lake District hill farming. As Mrs William Heelis she became one of the region's most respected breeders of native Herdwick sheep, farming thousands of acres and deliberately buying failing farms to keep them, their flocks and their tenant families intact.

The story

Potter bought Hill Top Farm in 1905 with the earnings from her books and learned the fell-farming trade from her shepherds, showing Herdwick ewes under her married name and taking prizes at Lake District agricultural shows through the 1930s. In 1943 she was elected president-designate of the Herdwick Sheepbreeders' Association — the first woman chosen — but died before taking office. Her will left 14 farms and over 4,000 acres to the National Trust, on the condition that Herdwick flocks stay on the fell farms; they graze there still.

Norman Borlaug

United States / Mexico · 1914–2009

An Iowa farm boy turned plant pathologist, Borlaug bred semi-dwarf, disease-resistant wheat in Mexico from 1944 that would not collapse under heavy fertilizer. Its spread through Mexico, India and Pakistan ignited the Green Revolution; he received the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize and is often credited — uncheckably but not implausibly — with saving hundreds of millions of lives.

The story

Borlaug doubled his breeding speed with shuttle breeding — raising two generations a year by hauling seed between Sonora's winter fields and the high Toluca valley — against his supervisors' explicit advice that it could not work. On the October 1970 morning the Nobel Peace Prize was announced, he was already out in a wheat field near Toluca; when his wife drove out to tell him, he reportedly replied that someone was pulling her leg and carried on working the plots for the rest of the day.

Masanobu Fukuoka

Japan · 1913–2008

A trained plant pathologist who quit his inspection job at 25 and returned to his family's farm on Shikoku, Fukuoka spent seven decades developing 'natural farming': no tillage, no herbicides, rice and barley grown in a continuous rotation under clover and scattered straw. His 1975 book The One-Straw Revolution has been translated into more than 25 languages.

The story

Fukuoka's signature technique was the clay seed ball — seed mixed into clay pellets and scattered on unploughed ground, protecting it from birds and drought until rain releases it. He demonstrated rice yields comparable to his conventional neighbors' without ploughing or keeping paddies flooded all season, and in later decades carried seed balls to re-vegetation projects in India, Greece and Africa. The Philippines' Ramon Magsaysay Award, often called Asia's Nobel, recognized his work in 1988.

Yuan Longping

China · 1930–2021

Teaching agronomy at a rural Hunan school through China's famine years, Yuan defied the era's official Lysenkoist doctrine to pursue hybrid rice, achieving the world's first commercially viable hybrid in 1973. Yielding roughly 20 percent more than conventional varieties, his rice spread across more than half of China's paddies and to farms worldwide.

The story

Hybrid rice was impossible without a male-sterile parent plant, and for years none could be found — until 1970, when Yuan's assistant Li Bihu spotted a single wild male-sterile rice plant, later nicknamed 'Wild Abortive,' near a pond on Hainan island. That one plant became the genetic key to virtually all early hybrid rice. When Yuan died in May 2021, crowds lined the streets of Changsha as his cortege passed, and mourners left bundles of fresh rice stalks at the funeral home in tribute.

The argument

Borlaug's Green Revolution is the most contested legacy on the list: credited with averting mass famine in South Asia, it is also blamed for Punjab's falling water tables, fertilizer and pesticide dependence, lost crop diversity and farmer indebtedness — and the 'billion lives saved' figure attached to his name is an advocacy estimate no historian can verify.

Cincinnatus comes to us through Livy, writing four centuries after the events, and historians treat the plough-to-dictatorship story as patriotic legend at least as much as biography — which has never diminished its influence on how republics imagine the farmer.

Any named list misrepresents a profession whose founding achievement — domesticating wheat, rice, maize, cattle and the rest — was the anonymous, collective work of Neolithic farmers, and whose labor today is enormously female: women make up roughly 40 percent of the agricultural workforce in developing countries (FAO), yet hold title to a small fraction of the land they farm.
