Astronaut · The rarest job on Earth is practiced off it: roughly 700 people have ever held it, from Gagarin's 108 minutes to year-long tours on the space station.

The astronaut's defining skill is not courage but breadth under discipline: the same person must service a spectrometer, draw a crewmate's blood, repair a toilet, fly a robotic arm and speak to a classroom — all in one scheduled day, in an environment where a dropped bolt floats away and a careless valve can vent the room. Agencies call the ideal candidate an "expert generalist."

The second skill is invisible: living well in a confined, inescapable workplace. NASA's behavioral scientists rank group-living competence — sharing credit, absorbing friction, noticing a crewmate's bad week — alongside technical mastery, because a six-month increment can survive a broken pump far more easily than a broken crew relationship.

  1. 6–8 Wake-up, inspection and the daily planning conference

    Crews wake to Greenwich Mean Time, check station status, eat breakfast, and hold the morning conference with control centers in Houston, Moscow, Munich and Tsukuba that locks the day's timeline.

  2. 8–13 Morning block: science and maintenance

    The core work, scheduled in five-minute increments on an electronic timeline: running experiments, drawing blood samples, swapping pumps and filters, photographing Earth targets — whatever the planners loaded.

  3. 13–14 Lunch

    Rehydrated and thermostabilized food eaten together when timelines allow; the shared table, velcroed and magnetized, is the station's main social institution.

  4. 14–16 Exercise: two hours, every day

    Resistance work on the ARED machine plus treadmill or cycle: without daily loading, weightless crews lose bone density at roughly one percent a month, so exercise is written into the timeline as a task, not a break.

  5. 16–19 Afternoon block: experiments, robotics, EVA preparation

    More science, robotic-arm operations for visiting vehicles, and — in the days before a spacewalk — suit checks, tool configuration and procedure reviews with the ground.

  6. 19–6 Evening conference, dinner, family calls and sleep

    A closing conference with the ground, dinner, email and video calls home, then sleep strapped into a bag in a phone-booth-sized crew quarters — while the station's systems, and the ground shifts, keep watch.

Chris Hadfield's formulation of the corps' core habit: continuously rehearsing the next most probable failure — during ascent, docking, a spacewalk — so the response is already loaded when it happens. Astronauts call this productive pessimism; simulation instructors grade it as sharply as manual skill.

Slow is fast in a spacesuit

A spacewalker who hurries overheats, fogs the visor and burns through oxygen and grip strength — the forearms give out first, not the legs. EVA training drills a deliberate cadence: move one hand, pause, breathe, move the next, and let the suit's pace set the plan rather than the timeline.

Anchor before you act

In weightlessness, Newton's third law is the whole game: turn a bolt without bracing and you spin instead of it. Eugene Cernan's near-catastrophic Gemini 9 spacewalk in 1966 — heart rate near 170, visor fogged blind — taught NASA that footholds and handrails matter more than strength; Buzz Aldrin proved it that November with underwater rehearsal and restraints.

Work the problem

Mission control's discipline, drilled into crews: when something fails, do not guess and do not leap — read the caution panel, run the malfunction procedure step by step, and change one variable at a time. It is how Apollo 13's crew and controllers turned an exploding oxygen tank into a survivable navigation exercise.

First, wind the clock

An old test-pilot adage carried into both corps: in an emergency, the first act is to do something slow and harmless — classically, winding the cockpit clock — because the first impulse is usually wrong and most aircraft, and spacecraft, give you more seconds than panic does. Simulator instructors still fail crews for acting faster than they diagnose.

Expeditionary behavior

NASA teaches group living as an explicit, gradeable skill: share credit and take blame publicly, do more than your share of the chores, tell people what you need early, and monitor crewmates' state as you would a life-support system. Candidates practice it on NOLS wilderness expeditions and undersea NEEMO missions before ever flying.

Tools of the trade

EMU spacesuit

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit is a wearable one-person spacecraft — oxygen, cooling water, carbon-dioxide scrubbing and 4.3 psi of pressure — in which US-segment spacewalkers work for six to eight hours; Russia's Orlan suit is its rear-entry counterpart.

Canadarm2

The station's 17-metre robotic arm, operated from an internal workstation, catches uncrewed cargo vehicles in free flight and carries spacewalkers on its end like a cherry-picker; robotics qualification is a core astronaut certification.

T-38 Talon

NASA's two-seat supersonic jet trainer, flown continuously by the corps since the 1960s — not nostalgia but a deliberate tool for practicing real-time, real-consequence cockpit decision-making between flights.

ARED

The Advanced Resistive Exercise Device uses vacuum cylinders to simulate up to about 270 kilograms of barbell load in weightlessness — the machine that keeps months-long crews' bones and muscles flight-worthy.

The commute vehicles. Both dock automatically — Soyuz's Kurs system dates to the 1980s — but every crew trains extensively to fly manual backup, because the day automation fails is the day the job reverts to test piloting.

How people fail at it

Treating selection as the summit

The corps is mostly ground work — mission control shifts, hardware testing, years between assignments — and some astronauts wait over a decade to fly, as Jeanette Epps did from 2009 to 2024. Those who cannot stay excellent, and visibly agreeable, through the unglamorous years quietly stop being assigned.

Becoming hard to live with

Technical brilliance does not offset being the crewmate nobody wants for six months. Peer evaluations and behavioral assessments feed directly into crew assignments, and the corps' informal verdict — would I fly with this person again? — ends more flying careers than any exam.

The post-flight void

Buzz Aldrin wrote openly about the depression and alcoholism that followed Apollo 11 — the problem of being asked, at 39, what one does after the Moon. Agencies now prepare crews for re-entry into ordinary life almost as deliberately as for launch, because the fall from mission-grade purpose is real and documented.
