Diplomatic pay is unusually compressed at entry level and unusually wide at the top: a newly hired officer earns roughly the same modest government salary almost everywhere, while a career ambassador's pay, benefits and status can be many multiples of that starting figure after two or three decades of promotion.
It is also unusually country-dependent in ways that don't track prestige. Where the demand is going
Demand for diplomats tracks government budgets far more than economic cycles: foreign ministries hire in relatively fixed numbers set by national legislatures, so a strong global economy rarely expands the number of available postings the way it would in the private sector.
Entry is the real bottleneck almost everywhere. Large countries like India and China see hundreds of thousands of applicants compete for a few hundred diplomatic slots a year, while smaller foreign services may hire only a handful of new officers annually — competition for the traditional career-service route stays fierce even where overall geopolitical demand for skilled negotiators is rising.
Growth is real but concentrated outside the traditional national foreign ministry: multilateral bodies, regional organizations like the EU and African Union, and city or sub-national "paradiplomacy" offices have all expanded the total pool of diplomatic-adjacent jobs even as individual national foreign services largely hold their headcount flat.
