Astronomer · The scientist who measures the universe, from Babylonian clay tablets to space telescopes, still deciding which flicker in the data is a discovery.

Astronomy pays like the academic career it is: modest stipends through a decade of training, comfortable-but-not-lavish salaries after, and almost no private-sector premium within the field itself — the observatories, universities and space agencies that employ astronomers are overwhelmingly publicly funded. The striking money numbers sit at the edges: the near-poverty PhD years, and the large raises taken by those who leave for data science.

Geography matters twice over. Salaries differ by country in the usual way, but so does the location of the sky: Chile hosts most of the world's large optical telescopes and guarantees its own astronomers a tenth of all observing time, and the fastest-growing employer of astronomers over the past decade has been China, whose facilities now include the world's largest single-dish radio telescope.

Who employs them

European Southern Observatory (ESO)

Sixteen member states' shared observatory in Chile — Paranal, La Silla, ALMA partnership — now building the 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope; hires astronomers, fellows and engineers across Garching and Chile.

NASA

Employs astronomers as civil servants and contractors at Goddard, JPL and other centers, running space telescopes and planetary missions; the largest single funder of US astronomy.

Where the demand is going

The core imbalance is structural: universities worldwide produce several times more astronomy PhDs each year than there are permanent research posts, so the academic market is a tournament in which multiple postdocs are the norm and many well-trained people ultimately place outside the field. Unemployment among astronomy PhDs is nonetheless very low — the training doubles as elite preparation for data science, finance and the space industry.

Where the field is growing, it is growing with facilities: the Rubin Observatory's survey decade, the Extremely Large Telescope, the Square Kilometre Array in Australia and South Africa, and China's sustained build-out are all creating staff, engineering and data-science posts tied to instruments rather than professorships. Chile's host-country privileges have likewise built a genuine national community around the telescopes on its mountains.

The commercial space boom touches the profession's edges rather than its core: satellite operators, launch firms and space-situational-awareness companies hire people with astronomy training, but they need orbital dynamics and sensors, not cosmology. For research astronomy itself, the decisive variable remains what it has been since Babylon — whether the state keeps paying for the sky.
