Holding a three-dimensional building, its structure and how light and people move through it, entirely in the mind while looking at a two-dimensional drawing or screen.

  1. 0–7 Off the clock

    Most architects are not on call overnight; exceptions are principals dealing with time-zone-shifted international projects or last-minute submission deadlines.

  2. 7–9 Site visit or commute

    Many days begin with a site visit before the office opens, checking construction progress against drawings while light and access are best, or fielding email on the commute.

  3. 9–12 Design and drawing

    The most protected block of the day, spent developing design options or producing construction documents in BIM software — the work most people picture when they imagine an architect.

Design at the scale you'll be judged at

A designer should understand a building at every scale from the city block down to the doorknob before committing to a single drawing, since a plan that looks resolved at one scale routinely falls apart at another.

Draw the section before the plan

Autodesk Revit

The dominant Building Information Modelling platform in most English-speaking markets, used to produce a coordinated 3D model that generates plans, sections and schedules from a single data set rather than separate flat drawings.

Rhino + Grasshopper

3D modelling software paired with a visual scripting plug-in that lets architects generate and adjust complex, rule-based geometry parametrically — standard kit for competition and free-form design work.

AutoCAD

The original desktop drafting programme, launched in 1982; still widely used for two-dimensional detailing, especially in markets and smaller practices that never fully migrated to BIM.

How people fail at it

Falling in love with the first concept

Committing emotionally to an early design idea before testing alternatives leads to defending a weak scheme instead of improving it, and it shows in the jury room or the client meeting.

Underestimating construction cost

A beautiful design that blows through the client's budget gets value-engineered by someone else, usually badly; architects who don't track cost as they design lose control of their own project.

Treating code compliance as an afterthought

Leaving fire egress, accessibility or zoning checks until late in a project can force a redesign of the whole building; the code has to shape the concept, not just get checked against it at the end.
