The core competence of an archaeologist is noticing: a change in soil color half a shade darker, a line of stones slightly too straight to be natural, three sherds that should not be in the same layer. Excavation technique exists to slow the digger down to the speed of noticing — and recording exists because each observation can be made exactly once.
Around that core, the modern job stacks a second profession's worth of skills: surveying instruments and geophysics, database and GIS work, bone and pottery identification, project logistics in remote places, and the diplomacy of working on other people's land, heritage and dead. Nobody masters all of it; every dig is an assembly of specialists around a trench.

Digging in the reverse order of deposition — recognizing each layer and cut, excavating it cleanly, and never mixing contexts, because the sequence is the evidence.
Recording discipline
Context sheets, scaled drawings, photographs, survey coordinates and finds registers, kept accurately through heat, mud and fatigue; the record is the only thing that survives the dig.
Survey & remote sensing
Fieldwalking, total stations and GNSS, magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR and satellite imagery — finding and mapping sites without, or before, breaking ground.

A day in the life
5–6Rise before the heat
Field seasons run on summer light and temperature: breakfast at dawn in the dig house, tools loaded, crews on site as the sun comes up — earliest in hot climates, where afternoon digging is unsafe.
6–13Trench time
The excavation itself: troweling, shoveling and sieving by context, with constant pauses to photograph, draw and record each layer before it is removed, and finds bagged and labeled as they come up.
13–14Lunch and shade
A communal meal and enforced rest at the day's hottest hour — dig houses from Jordan to Arizona keep the same rhythm for the same physiological reasons.
14–17Finds processing
Washing, marking, sorting and cataloguing the morning's pottery, bone and small finds; specialists start identifications while the excavators who found the material are still on hand to answer questions.
17–19Records and database
Context sheets checked and entered, plans digitized, photographs filed, the site matrix updated — the unglamorous hours that decide whether the season can actually be published.
19–5Dig-house evening
Dinner, the day's finds argued over, tomorrow's plan set; on many digs a lecture or pottery session, then early sleep. Off season, the same profession works office hours: reports, teaching, lab work and grant writing.

Dig the reverse of deposition
Kathleen Kenyon's rule, built on Wheeler's grids at Jericho in the 1950s: excavate the most recent layer completely before touching the one beneath, and keep vertical sections standing so the sequence stays readable in the trench wall. The discipline of never chasing an interesting find down through the layers is the first thing field schools teach and the hardest to obey.

The Harris matrix
Every context — each layer, pit cut, wall or fill — gets a number and a card, and its relationships (earlier than, later than, same as) build a single diagram of the whole site's sequence. Invented by Edward Harris at Winchester in 1973, the matrix lets a thousand-context urban excavation be checked for contradictions the way an accountant checks a ledger.

Seriation: dating by style
Flinders Petrie ordered around 900 predynastic Egyptian graves by the changing styles of their pottery alone, publishing the method as "sequence dating" in 1899 — proving that artifacts can be arranged in time by gradual change in fashion, no written dates required. Seriation remains the fallback chronology wherever radiocarbon is impossible, and the logic underlies modern statistical phasing.

Read the ground in raking light
Soil differences invisible at noon leap out when the sun is low and shadows rake across the surface, or when a cleaned surface is lightly wetted; experienced excavators time photography and feature-hunting for early morning and evening, and re-trowel a surface rather than stare at it. Site manuals codify the trick, but it is learned by being handed the camera at 6 a.m.

Float the soil, not just the finds
The story of a site is as much in charred seeds, fish bones and charcoal as in its walls, so sample every sealed context and run the soil through water flotation. Stuart Struever's campaign for the technique from 1968 transformed the archaeology of agriculture; the craft point is to decide what to sample before the layer is gone, not after.

Leave something for the future
Better instruments are always coming, so a well-run project deliberately excavates only part of a site and preserves the rest in situ — the principle written into Europe's 1992 Valletta Convention, and the logic by which China has left the tomb mound of Qin Shi Huang unopened for fifty years. Restraint is a method: the best question to ask of a site is sometimes none.
Tools of the trade
Pointing trowel (WHS / Marshalltown)
The four-inch mason's trowel is the universal excavation instrument, scraping soil away in controlled millimeters; which brand is proper is a genuine, decades-old tribal marker between British- and American-trained diggers.
Total station & GNSS
Survey instruments that fix every find, feature and trench corner in three-dimensional coordinates; the total station replaced tape-and-plumb-bob planning from the 1990s, and centimeter-accurate satellite positioning now anchors whole landscapes.
Magnetometer & ground-penetrating radar
Geophysical instruments that map buried walls, ditches and hearths from the surface without digging — the "geofizz" of Time Team fame — used to target trenches and, increasingly, to record sites that will never be excavated at all.
Flotation tank & sieves
Water separation lifts carbonized seeds, charcoal and tiny bones out of excavated soil; popularized by Stuart Struever in the 1960s, flotation turned ancient diet and agriculture from guesswork into data and made the humble soil sample a primary find.
Photogrammetry & GIS software
Overlapping photographs processed into measurable 3D models now document trenches, buildings and objects daily, while geographic information systems hold the site's every layer and find in queryable space — the modern equivalents of the plan table and the site notebook.
How people fail at it
Digging without publishing
The profession's besetting sin: seasons of excavation that never reach a final report, leaving destroyed layers and boxed finds that answer nothing. Whole famous excavations have taken generations to publish, and permit authorities in Egypt, Greece and elsewhere now refuse new concessions to directors with unpublished backlogs.
Chasing objects over context
The treasure reflex — trophy finds prioritized over the boring layers that date and explain them — is how sites were wrecked for centuries, and it still distorts projects that need museum-quality finds for funders and headlines. The discipline's entire method exists to resist it, and every field school war-story is about someone who did not.
The precarity trap
Early-career archaeology means short contracts, seasonal moves, camping-grade housing and pay near the legal minimum, while knees, backs and relationships absorb the damage; surveys of the UK and US profession consistently flag attrition in the 30s as trained excavators leave for stabler work. Loving the trench is not a pension plan, and the field is honest with students about it.
