Watchmaker · The craftsman who builds and revives the tiny machine on the wrist — a trade that survived the quartz crisis and now has more work than trained hands.

Watchmaking is a strange case in the automation debate because its automation crisis already happened. Quartz was the disruption — a mechanical watch has been technically unnecessary for fifty years — and the trade that survived did so by moving its value from timekeeping to craft, provenance and repair. You cannot disrupt a product whose selling point is that humans made it the hard way.

The exposed part of the trade is therefore not the luxury bench but the production line and the routine service bay: robots already assemble quartz modules and simple mechanical calibers, and modular servicing — swap the movement, keep the case — is spreading. The protected part is everything singular: the worn, the vintage, the complicated and the handmade, where every watch arrives as a different problem.

Production assembly is already substantially automated and routine battery-and-module service is going the same way, which is real exposure for the trade's routine end. But repair and restoration — the majority of bench work — resists automation for a physical reason: every worn movement is a unique mechanical situation requiring diagnosis, disassembly and often hand-made parts. No robot strips and rebuilds a corroded 1955 chronograph, and the luxury market's core promise — human craft — makes automating the visible workmanship self-defeating.

How the work is changing

Parts lockdown and the right-to-repair fight

Since the 2000s, major groups have progressively restricted spare-parts supply to their own accredited networks — Swatch Group's ETA curtailed third-party supply, and most luxury brands now sell parts only to approved workshops. Independent repairers must win accreditation, buy donor watches, or make parts themselves; the policy war over repair access is reshaping who can practice.

The pre-owned boom feeds the bench

The certified pre-owned market — formalized when Rolex launched its own CPO program through Bucherer in December 2022 — turns every resale into an authentication and servicing event. Growth in watches circulating, rather than watches sold new, is now a primary driver of demand for qualified watchmakers.

Brands become schools

With retirements outpacing graduates, brands have concluded they must manufacture watchmakers as well as watches: Rolex's Lititz Technicum, the Hayek schools on three continents and consortium-funded academies like Manchester's are hiring pipelines disguised as education — and their seats still do not meet demand.

The smartwatch settles into coexistence

Apple alone has shipped more watches per year than the entire Swiss industry since around 2017, yet Swiss export value set records into 2023 — the markets split rather than merged. Smartwatches created a separate, module-swap service economy while pushing mechanical watches further into the craft-object category that protects the bench.

Specialists who conserve, document and prepare important vintage watches for sale at Phillips, Christie's and Sotheby's — part watchmaker, part historian, part forensic examiner, paid on the stakes of seven-figure lots.

Authentication specialist

The pre-owned boom and increasingly good counterfeits created full-time work verifying watches for CPO programs, dealers and insurers — movement-level inspection knowledge applied as a trust service rather than a repair.

Micro-mechanical technician in medtech

The Swiss Jura's medical-device and micro-engineering firms recruit watchmaker-trained hands for assembling implants, surgical instruments and precision mechanisms — the same dexterity and cleanliness discipline, applied outside horology.

Watchmaking educator and content maker

Teaching posts at the expanding brand academies, plus a genuine online economy: restoration channels and service video makers have built audiences of millions, turning bench work itself into media that recruits the next generation.

Outlook

The quartz crisis was a controlled experiment in what happens when this trade's product is made obsolete, and the result is on record: the routine end collapsed, the craft end survived and eventually flourished. AI and robotics rerun the same experiment on the service side, and the same split should be expected — module-swap work automates, singular work concentrates value on fewer, better-trained hands.

The trade's actual near-term problem is the opposite of replacement: a demographic gap, with experienced watchmakers retiring faster than schools graduate successors while the installed base of mechanical watches — new, inherited and traded — keeps growing. For a young entrant with recognized training, watchmaking offers something rare among craft trades in the 2020s: employers competing for graduates.

The long-term wager of the whole industry is that human workmanship keeps its price premium precisely because automation makes it scarce. Fifty years of evidence since the Astron says the wager holds — but it holds for the watchmaker whose skills sit above what the machines absorb, which keeps ratcheting the training bar upward.
