Watchmaker · The craftsman who builds and revives the tiny machine on the wrist — a trade that survived the quartz crisis and now has more work than trained hands.
From outside, watchmaking looks like patience plus small fingers. From the bench, it is closer to surgery on a patient with no pulse: a diagnostic discipline — why does this watch lose forty seconds a day only when worn? — wrapped around a manual one, where the difference between correct and ruined is a screwdriver slip measured in hundredths of a millimetre.
The skills stack in a strict order. First, hand control: filing flat, gripping without pinging parts across the room. Then servicing: strip, clean, oil, reassemble, regulate. Only then the rarer layers — making parts that no longer exist, finishing steel until it reflects black, and the restorer's judgment about what an old watch should keep of its scars.

A day in the life
7–8Bench preparation
White coat, washed hands, finger cots, fresh bench paper; check the watches left running overnight on the timing machine and winders, and log their rates across positions.
8–12Disassembly and diagnosis
Open the morning's watches, strip movements completely — every screw, jewel and spring into ordered trays — photographing stages, and diagnose faults: worn pivots, dried oil, a hairspring touching the balance arm.
12–13Parts, estimates and lunch
Order spares through brand parts accounts, price out jobs where a part must be made by hand, call customers with estimates, and eat away from the bench — crumbs and movements do not mix.
13–17Assembly and oiling
The precision block of the day: cleaned parts reassembled in sequence, each jewel oiled with its specified lubricant in a dose judged by eye through the loupe, escapement checked tooth by tooth.
17–19Regulation, casing and handover
Regulate on the timegrapher across positions, adjust beat error, case up, test water resistance under pressure, polish the case if agreed, and hand finished watches to their owners with the service report.
19–7The overnight test
Serviced watches run unattended through the night — dial up, dial down, crown positions on rotation — because a watch that keeps time for an hour proves nothing; the bench is silent but the testing never stops.

Oil is dosed by reflection, not volume
Correct oiling is judged optically: the oil should sit in the jewel's cup covering roughly half the cap-jewel surface, its edge visible as a clean ring of reflection under the loupe. Too much migrates along surfaces and gums the train; too little runs dry in two years. Schools teach it as a visual standard precisely because no dispenser at this scale is more repeatable than a trained eye.

Dress your tweezers before you touch a part
Parts ping across workshops because tweezer tips meet at an angle and squeeze the part out like a watermelon seed. The discipline is to stone the tips flat, parallel and meeting square, then hold every part with the minimum force that controls it. Old hands check their tweezers on a scrap of tissue paper each morning before the first screw.

Black polishing on a tin plate
The finest flat polish on steel — poli noir — is achieved by rubbing the part on a zinc or tin plate charged with diamond paste in tightening figures, until the surface reflects light at only one angle: dead black or pure white, nothing between. Philippe Dufour, its most famous living practitioner, finishes edges with a strip of gentian wood from the Vallée de Joux meadows.

Read the timegrapher trace like an ECG
The two dotted lines of a timing trace carry a diagnosis before the case back is off: a clean pair of parallel lines diverging means simple rate error; a regular ripple repeating with the train's period points to a damaged tooth or bent pivot; scattered dots mean dirt or magnetism. Experienced watchmakers demagnetize first and re-test — the commonest fault costs nothing to fix.

Adjust in positions, not just on the bench
A watch that keeps perfect time dial-up can lose a minute a day on a wrist, because gravity loads the balance pivots differently in every position. Chronometer adjustment means regulating across five or six positions and temperatures and closing the spread between them — the discipline distilled by a century of observatory timing competitions at Neuchâtel, Geneva and Kew.

Make the whole watch, and the parts teach each other
George Daniels' method was to master every trade a watch contains — wheel cutting, pivoting, springing, case making, engine-turning, some thirty in all — so that no supplier's compromise ever dictated a design decision. He argued the crafts illuminate one another: you oil differently once you have made a pivot, and design differently once you have polished one.
Tools of the trade
Loupe
The eyeglass worn in the eye socket, from 2.5x for general work to 10x and microscopes for escapements — the watchmaker's defining tool since the trade began, and the reason perfect eyesight matters less than people assume.
Tweezers and screwdrivers
Precision tweezers (Dumont of Switzerland is the classic maker) and graded screwdrivers, all hand-dressed by their owner: tips stoned flat and parallel so parts are held by geometry, not pressure. A watchmaker is judged partly on how their tweezers are kept.
Timing machine (timegrapher)
The electronic listener — Witschi's machines are the industry standard — that hears the escapement's tick and displays rate, amplitude and beat error as a live trace, turning regulation from days of observation into minutes of measurement.
Watchmaker's lathe and Jacot tool
The 8mm lathe turns new staffs, stems and screws from steel rod; the Jacot tool burnishes pivots to a mirror finish thousandths of a millimetre at a time. Together they are what separates a parts-swapper from a restorer.
Oils and oilers
A service uses half a dozen Moebius lubricants — thin synthetic oils for fast pivots, greases for the mainspring, epilame coating to keep them in place — applied with needle-tipped oilers in dots invisible without magnification. Most of a movement must stay bone dry.
How people fail at it
Over-oiling
The beginner's signature mistake: a generous drop where a microdot belongs. Excess oil creeps by capillary action onto the hairspring or pallet stones, the rate collapses within months, and the watch returns needing a full second service — which is why examiners inspect oiling under high magnification before anything else.
Forcing the irreplaceable
Vintage watches are one seized screw away from disaster: force a rusted stem or pry a stuck bezel and you destroy parts no factory has made since the 1950s, erasing more value than the whole repair fee. Restorers are trained to stop, soak, warm and wait — the discipline of not finishing today what patience can save entirely.
Selling eight hours as one
Workshops fail commercially more often than technically: a proper service takes hours plus days of testing, but customers anchor on battery-swap prices. Watchmakers who underquote to be kind drown in backlog and quit the bench; the trade's business skill is pricing honest time without apology.
