No profession on this site faces a more literal version of the automation question: ships that sail themselves are not a thought experiment but a Norwegian commercial service, a Japanese national research program and an active IMO rule-making file. Open-ocean steering was automated generations ago; the autopilot has held the course longer than most serving masters have been alive.
Yet the job's core has never been holding a course. It is carrying legal command — being the single accountable person when the engine dies in a gale, when a crew member's appendix bursts two thousand kilometers from a hospital, when a rubber boat full of people appears ahead and the law of the sea says you must stop. The realistic question is not whether the master disappears, but how much of the master's chair moves ashore, and how fast.
A substantial share of the master's traditional work — trackkeeping, voyage optimization, reporting, machinery watchkeeping — is already automated or handled ashore, and short-route coastal autonomy is in commercial trial. But international law still requires a human in command of seagoing ships, emergencies at sea remain beyond remote resolution, and the IMO's autonomous-ship code is years from mandatory force. The role will shrink in numbers and change shape well before it disappears.
