Chemist · The scientist who makes and measures matter itself — from Tapputi's Babylonian perfume still to today's robot laboratories, still the one who decides what the spectrum means.

No science has had a stranger public standing than chemistry. Its practitioners have been courted by kings and burned as frauds, celebrated for feeding the world and blamed for poisoning it — sometimes for the same molecule. The word "chemical" itself has drifted from neutral to faintly sinister in everyday English, a linguistic fate no other science's vocabulary has suffered.

Inside the laboratory, meanwhile, chemists on every continent built a remarkably uniform culture: the same white coats and safety glasses, the same bound and dated notebooks, the same rueful proverbs about reactions that fail on Fridays. The rituals exist because the work is unforgiving — a mislabeled flask or an unrecorded observation can cost months, or a life.

Chemical skill meant temple and palace employment — perfumers, glassmakers, metallurgists and embalmers held respected specialist positions, though much workshop labor was done by the unnamed and, in Rome, the enslaved. Recipes were property; the perfumer Tapputi's title marked her as overseer of a royal household.

Age of alchemy (300–1660)

Alchemists lived on a knife-edge between patronage and prison: princes funded them hoping for gold, then jailed or hanged them as frauds when it failed to appear. Several German courts kept special gilded gallows for the purpose, and the popular image of the alchemist became the charlatan of Ben Jonson's 1610 comedy The Alchemist.

Gentleman's science (1660–1860)

The chemical revolution made chemistry respectable — Lavoisier was a state official, Davy's Royal Institution lectures were London society events, and Liebig's Giessen laboratory made a chemistry degree a serious credential. Still a small profession, part scholarship and part trade, its status rose with each public triumph.

Industrial heyday (1860–1970)

Synthetic dyes, fertilizers, plastics, antibiotics: chemists became the visible engine of prosperity, celebrated in DuPont's 1935 slogan "Better Things for Better Living … Through Chemistry." German PhD chemists invented the corporate research lab, and a chemistry Nobel carried the same public glamour a tech founder enjoys today.

Ambivalent present (1970–now)

Silent Spring, napalm, CFCs and PFAS turned "chemicals" into an accusation, and DuPont quietly dropped "through chemistry" from its slogan in 1982. The profession retains solid respect and essential status — every drug, battery and chip depends on it — but now works under public suspicion its nineteenth-century predecessors never knew.

Jacques-Louis David

David's monumental double portrait shows Lavoisier at a table of gleaming scientific instruments, turning toward Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier — his translator, illustrator and collaborator, who stands over him. Painted a year before his Traité and six before the guillotine, it fixed the image of the chemist as modern, elegant and doomed; it now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Italian chemist and Auschwitz survivor structured his memoir as twenty-one chapters, each named for an element, moving between the industrial labs of Turin and the chemistry that helped him survive the camp. Proverbs and idioms

Latin maxim of early modern pharmacy and chemistry"Substances do not react unless dissolved" — the old bench rule that reactions need their partners in solution, quoted for centuries and famously inverted by Paul Ehrlich (corpora non agunt nisi fixata) to found receptor theory in pharmacology.

Like dissolves like.

Universal laboratory rule of thumbPolar solvents dissolve polar substances, oily solvents dissolve oily ones — the first heuristic every chemist learns, used daily to choose a solvent for a reaction, an extraction or a stubborn cleanup.

Better living through chemistry.

From DuPont's 1935 advertising slogan, United StatesCoined as "Better Things for Better Living … Through Chemistry," it captured mid-century faith in chemical progress; the phrase is now quoted both straight and ironically, tracking exactly how public feeling about the profession has shifted.

Chemie ist, wenn es knallt und stinkt.

German schoolroom saying"Chemistry is when it bangs and stinks" — the affectionate German summary of the school laboratory, usually completed with "Physik ist, wenn's nie gelingt" ("physics is when nothing ever works"). A reminder that most chemists were first seduced by smoke and smell.

Rites, symbols and dress

Goggles on, coat on

Crossing the lab threshold means safety glasses and a buttoned lab coat, and every working chemist has reflexively reached for phantom goggles outside the lab. The rule is enforced peer-to-peer rather than top-down — a bare-eyed visitor will be challenged within seconds in any well-run laboratory on Earth, making eye protection the profession's true uniform and its most universal social ritual.

The bound notebook

The laboratory notebook — bound, ink-written, dated, every failure included — descends from exemplars like Michael Faraday's diary, kept daily for over forty years. In American corporate labs, notebooks were long signed and dated by a witness because under US patent law priority of invention could hang on a page; the habit of writing so that a stranger could repeat the work remains the profession's core discipline.

Naming an element

The rarest rite in science: discoverers of a new element earn the right to propose its name, which IUPAC rules must honor a mythology, mineral, place, property or scientist. The four names announced in 2016 mapped the modern profession — nihonium, the first element named in Asia, for Japan's RIKEN institute; moscovium and tennessine for rival labs; and oganesson for Yuri Oganessian, only the second person ever to see an element named for him while alive.

The culture's constants — goggles, notebooks, proverbs about solvents — all serve the same need: chemistry is the science where the experiment can physically fight back, and where the difference between a result and an artifact lives in the details someone bothered to write down.

The profession's public image, meanwhile, keeps oscillating between Prometheus and poisoner, often within a single molecule's lifetime. Chemists have learned to live inside that ambivalence; the work itself, as Primo Levi wrote of his trade, remains a daily contest with matter that neither flatters nor forgives.
