Aerospace engineering pays well above the median wage almost everywhere it is practiced, but less spectacularly than software engineering at the very top, since the field's biggest employers are large, slower-moving industrial companies and government agencies rather than fast-growing technology firms competing on stock compensation.

Demand runs in cycles tied to defense budgets, airliner order books and, more recently, a genuine private-sector space boom: a decade of relatively flat civil hiring has been followed by SpaceX, Blue Origin and a wave of satellite-launch startups competing for the same pool of aerodynamics, propulsion and structures engineers.

Boeing

One of the world's two dominant airliner manufacturers, also a major US defense and space contractor, though it has faced serious safety and quality-control scrutiny since 2018–2019.

Lockheed Martin

Where the demand is going

Demand has diverged sharply by sector. Commercial aviation production slowed sharply during the 2020 pandemic and then struggled with supply-chain and quality problems through the mid-2020s, while the commercial space sector — launch providers, satellite manufacturers and the companies building ground infrastructure around them — has hired aggressively as launch costs fall and satellite constellations multiply.

Long-run government forecasts still show solid growth for the occupation overall, and defense budgets in the US, Europe and Asia have risen substantially since 2022 amid renewed geopolitical tension, but the mix of roles is shifting: software, autonomy and systems-integration skills are growing in relative importance faster than traditional structures and aerodynamics specialties.
