Quick answers

What does a marketer actually do?

A marketer is responsible for demand: identifying who might buy a product, understanding why, and orchestrating everything — positioning, pricing input, advertising, content, distribution choices — that turns that understanding into sales. Day to day the work ranges from writing creative briefs and reviewing ads to analyzing campaign dashboards, running research and negotiating budgets. The mix depends heavily on whether the role is brand, performance, content or product marketing.

Do you need a degree to become a marketer?

No law requires one anywhere, and the field has no license. In practice most corporate marketers hold a bachelor's degree — marketing, business, psychology, communications — because large employers screen for it. But agencies and startups routinely hire on portfolio and results instead: a self-run campaign, a channel you grew, ad-platform certifications. Marketing remains one of the few well-paid professions where demonstrated work can substitute for formal credentials.

How much do marketers earn?

It varies by country, seniority and specialty. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the 2023 median for advertising, promotions and marketing managers at roughly $157,000, while entry-level coordinators typically start around $45,000–$55,000. UK marketing managers commonly earn £45,000–£65,000 (2024); Indian brand managers far less in dollar terms. Large-company CMOs earn several hundred thousand dollars before bonus and equity.

What is the difference between marketing and advertising?

Advertising is one tool inside marketing. Marketing covers the whole demand system — which product to offer, at what price, through which channels, to which segment, with what positioning — while advertising is specifically the paid promotion of that offer. E. Jerome McCarthy's 1960 formulation of the 4 Ps made the distinction standard: advertising lives inside just one P, promotion. Many marketers never buy an ad at all.

What are the 4 Ps of marketing?

Product, price, place and promotion — the four levers a marketer controls, formulated by E. Jerome McCarthy in his 1960 textbook Basic Marketing and spread worldwide through Philip Kotler's Marketing Management from 1967 onward. The framework's point is that promotion alone cannot rescue the wrong product at the wrong price in the wrong channel. Later variants add Ps like people and process, but the original four remain the field's shared grammar.

Will AI replace marketers?

It is already replacing large parts of the work: media buying went programmatic years ago, and generative models now draft copy, produce ad variants and assemble reports. What resists automation is judgment — choosing a position competitors cannot copy, sensing what a culture will find fresh rather than embarrassing, and persuading a board to fund a strategy. Marketers who only execute channels face real displacement; those who own strategy less so.

Marketing has one of the lowest formal barriers of any well-paid profession: no license, no bar exam, no protected title, and hiring practices that genuinely accept demonstrated results in place of credentials. That openness cuts both ways — it makes the field accessible from almost any starting point, and it makes early careers crowded, since every business graduate and every self-taught creator is a potential competitor for the same coordinator role.

The realistic gate is therefore not an exam but evidence. At every stage, what moves a marketer forward is a result with their name attached: an internship project that shipped, a channel that grew, a campaign with numbers, finally a P&L. The stages below describe the corporate route; the portfolio and self-taught routes described afterward skip steps but still terminate at the same gate — proof.

The route in

  1. 1

    Bachelor's degree (or equivalent proof)

    3–4 yrs

Most corporate marketers hold a degree in marketing, business, psychology, communications or economics; large employers use it as a screening filter even though no law requires it. Students who build something real alongside — a club they grew, a small business's social accounts — enter the next stage far ahead.

The filterInternship selection: competitive summer programs at major advertisers and agencies are the main corporate entry door, and they recruit hardest from final-year students with visible side projects.

  2. 2

    Internship and first coordinator role

    1–2 yrs

Marketing coordinator, assistant brand manager or agency account executive: calendar-keeping, campaign trafficking, reporting and the unglamorous mechanics of getting work approved and shipped. The real curriculum is learning how decisions actually get made around budgets.

The filterThe portfolio interview — junior candidates are separated less by grades than by whether they can show anything they personally grew, and explain the numbers behind it.

  3. 3

    Specialization

    2–3 yrs

The field forks: brand (positioning, campaigns, long-term equity), performance (paid search and social, conversion), content and social, product marketing (launches, sales enablement), or research and analytics. Most careers are built on depth in one before breadth across several.

The filterMeasurable results attached to your own name — a campaign, channel or launch you can defend in numbers — decide who gets the next title.

  4. 4

    Manager with budget ownership

    3–5 yrs

First real ownership: a budget, a team or an agency relationship, and accountability for targets rather than tasks. Some add an MBA or a professional diploma (such as the UK Chartered Institute of Marketing's) here; in marketing these accelerate rather than gate progression.

The filterThe first P&L conversation — being trusted to argue for and then answer for a spend, the skill that separates managers from coordinators everywhere in the field.

  5. 5

    Head of marketing / director

    3–5 yrs

Running the whole function for a business unit or company: hiring, agency selection, budget allocation across brand and performance, and translating marketing into the language of the CFO. Breadth across channels, and scars from at least one failed campaign, are effectively prerequisites.

The filterA track record across more than one channel and one company stage; at this level references and reputation inside the industry do most of the filtering.

  6. 6

    CMO / brand leadership

    Ongoing

The chief marketing officer owns growth strategy at board level — and holds the C-suite's most precarious seat: Spencer Stuart put average Fortune 500 CMO tenure at roughly 4.2 years in 2023. Many senior marketers instead branch to general management, agency leadership or their own ventures.

The filterBoard scrutiny, quarter after quarter: the CMO survives exactly as long as growth can be credibly attributed to marketing — the profession's ultimate exposed position.

Cost of entry $0 – $250k+

The spread is extreme. The self-taught route costs essentially nothing but time: platform certifications are free and a first ad budget can be a few hundred dollars. A US private university marketing degree plus a top MBA can exceed $250,000 in tuition alone (2024), while public universities in Germany or France deliver the same entry ticket for near-zero tuition. Unusually, the expensive route buys speed and network, not permission — the field itself charges no admission.

What to study

Marketing

The direct route

Covers consumer behavior, research methods, pricing and the 4 Ps canon descended from McCarthy and Kotler; the default major for brand-management recruiting at large consumer-goods companies, where campus pipelines remain strong.

Business administration

For the commercial spine

Finance, strategy and operations coursework builds the P&L literacy that separates marketing leaders from channel specialists — the CFO conversation is where marketing budgets live or die, and business majors arrive speaking the language.

Psychology

The discipline under the discipline

Marketing is applied behavioral science: perception, memory, persuasion and bias. Daniel Kahneman's work and the behavioral-economics wave made psychology training directly employable in research, pricing and creative testing roles.

Communications / journalism

For the content and storytelling track

Writing fast, clearly and for an audience is the daily work of content marketing, PR and social roles; journalism training's respect for the reader's attention transfers almost without modification.

Statistics / data science

The fastest-growing entry ticket

Marketing analytics, media-mix modeling and experimentation teams increasingly hire quantitative graduates who learn marketing on the job — the reverse of the traditional route, and often better paid at entry.

Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

United States

Philip Kotler taught here from 1962, and its marketing department shaped how the discipline is taught worldwide; still the archetypal marketing MBA.

INSEAD

France / Singapore

The two-campus "business school for the world," whose one-year MBA is a common accelerator for marketers moving into regional leadership across Europe and Asia.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad

India

India's most selective management school; its graduates dominate brand management at Hindustan Unilever and the Indian arms of global consumer-goods firms.

Licences and exams

Chartered Marketer (CIM)

United Kingdom & Commonwealth

The Chartered Institute of Marketing, holding a royal charter since 1989, awards Chartered Marketer status for assessed qualifications plus continuing professional development — the closest the field has to a professional license, though entirely voluntary.

Professional Certified Marketer (PCM)

United States

The American Marketing Association's exam-based certification across specializations such as digital marketing and marketing management; a résumé signal rather than a legal requirement, used most by career-changers proving baseline knowledge.

Google Ads & Analytics certifications

Global

Free exam-based certifications through Google Skillshop covering search, display, video and measurement. Entry-level performance-marketing hiring often treats them as a de facto minimum, making them the most-held credentials in the profession.

Digital Marketing Institute (DMI) certification

Ireland / global

Dublin-based DMI's Certified Digital Marketing Professional, co-designed with the American Marketing Association, is among the most widely taken paid digital-marketing credentials internationally, taught through partner institutions across dozens of countries.

The other way in

The portfolio route

Advertising's creative departments have always hired on the book, not the diploma: portfolio schools such as Miami Ad School (founded 1993, with campuses on several continents) and programs like D&AD Shift in London exist to build that book. A strong spec portfolio still outweighs any degree for copywriter and art-director roles.

The self-taught operator route

Performance marketing can be learned by doing it in public: take the free Google and Meta certifications, run a real budget for a local business or your own project, and document results. Agencies and startups hire proven operators without degrees, and many senior growth marketers in tech entered exactly this way.
