Quick facts

On 24 March 1882 Robert Koch announced the tubercle bacillus as the cause of tuberculosis.Koch 1882
Infection is typically by inhaling droplet nuclei that linger in shared indoor air, not by casual outdoor passing.Airborne nuclei
Many infected people never develop active disease. A minority later become ill, especially if immunity wanes.Latent vs active

Because mycobacteria grow slowly and persist, treatment lasts months. Exact regimens are clinical, not listed here as recipes.Long treatment idea
The Republic of Korea has historically had a high TB burden among OECD members; rates have fallen with public-health programmes.Korea and OECD

Tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial disease that can sleep for years and then wake as a chronic cough or worse.

Koch named the bacillus in 1882. BCG and long combination treatment later turned a romantic killer into a programme disease — still unfinished globally.

Frequently asked questions

Is TB spread by sharing cups?
The main route is shared indoor air over time. Brief outdoor contact is low risk compared with a poorly ventilated room.
What does latent TB mean?
The immune system contains bacilli without current illness. Tests can suggest this state; treatment decisions are clinical.
Does BCG prevent all TB?
It reduces severe childhood forms more reliably than adult pulmonary disease. Policies differ by country burden.
Why does treatment take so long?
Slow-growing mycobacteria and sheltered persisters need time. Stopping early can select resistance — a clinical warning, not a home schedule.
Is drug-resistant TB a different species?
No. It is M. tuberculosis that no longer responds to some drugs. That is a stewardship and programme problem.
Can you get TB twice?
Reinfection and relapse both occur. Prior disease does not grant perfect lifelong armor.
Is TB only a lung disease?
Lungs are common, but lymph nodes, bone, kidney and meninges can be involved. That is why diagnosis is clinical.
Is this medical advice?
No. Educational only. Cough lasting weeks, night sweats or known exposure need a licensed clinician, not a webpage.
