Is all E. coli dangerous?
No. Most strains are ordinary gut residents. A minority carry toxins or invasion tools that cause disease.
What is STEC?
Shiga-toxin producing E. coli. Foodborne outbreaks can cause bloody diarrhea and, in some children, kidney injury.
Why do we test water for E. coli?
Its presence suggests fecal pollution. It is a marker, not a complete list of every pathogen.
Does cooking kill STEC?
Adequate cooking of ground meat and hygiene around raw juices are standard public-health advice. Details for a kitchen follow local food-safety rules.
Should I take antibiotics for bloody diarrhea?
Some STEC illnesses can worsen with certain drugs. That is why this page does not prescribe — a clinician decides.
Is lab E. coli the same as outbreak E. coli?
