Bacteria are prokaryotes: DNA is not wrapped in a nucleus, ribosomes make protein, and many species build a peptidoglycan wall that Gram stain still uses as a first map.

They invented photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation and fermentation long before animals existed. Most lineages never infect a human; a minority of specialists cause famous diseases.

Are bacteria the same as archaea?
No. Both lack a nucleus, but membranes, ribosomes and many genes differ. Archaea are a separate domain.
Does Gram-positive mean more dangerous?
Gram stain is a wall type, not a virulence score. Tetanus and staph are Gram-positive; plague and E. coli are Gram-negative.
Can bacteria live without oxygen?
Many do. Anaerobes ferment or breathe sulphate, nitrate or other acceptors. Some are killed by oxygen.
Why won't most species grow on a lab plate?
They need partners, odd nutrients or slow generations. Sequencing sees far more diversity than culture.
Do antibiotics kill all bacteria?
Each class hits a target some cells lack or can protect. Resistance and 'good' gut species are why stewardship matters.
Are bacteria animals or plants?
Neither. They are their own domain of life, older than both kingdoms.
How fast can they divide?
E. coli can double in about 20 minutes in rich broth. Soil oligotrophs may take days or weeks.
