🌬️The Greats

Renewable Energy Engineer · Designs, builds and improves wind, solar, storage and grid systems that turn renewable resources into dependable electricity.

Renewable energy is built by teams, but its technical history has identifiable figures who made a device, a measurement or a deployment model practical.

These eight span hydroelectricity, photovoltaics, wind, batteries and the grid disciplines connecting them.

The eight who reached the top

1

Mária Telkes

Hungary / United States · 1900–1995

A physical chemist who developed solar-heating systems and phase-change storage, helping establish solar energy as an engineering rather than merely architectural idea.

The story

For the 1948 Dover Sun House in Massachusetts, Telkes used Glauber’s salt to store heat. The system later failed, but the public experiment made thermal storage a serious subject for later engineers.

“A failed field prototype can still reveal the right engineering problem.”

Russell Ohl

United States · 1898–1987

Bell Labs researcher credited with identifying the p–n junction effect that made modern silicon solar cells possible.

The story

In 1940, Ohl noticed that a cracked silicon sample produced current when illuminated. The accidental junction became a foundation for semiconductor photovoltaics.

“Investigate anomalous measurements; an imperfection may be the mechanism.”

Johannes Juul

Denmark · 1887–1969

Designed the Gedser turbine, whose three-bladed, stall-regulated architecture influenced the modern wind turbine.

The story

Juul’s 1957 Gedser turbine ran for years on Denmark’s coast, giving later researchers a durable full-scale reference when wind power revived.

“Reliability over years is more persuasive than a spectacular first run.”

Amory Lovins

United States · b. 1947

An energy analyst who popularized efficiency and distributed energy as strategic alternatives to centralized fuel supply.

The story

Lovins’s 1976 Foreign Affairs essay, “Energy Strategy: The Road Not Taken?”, challenged US planners to treat efficiency as an energy resource.

“The cheapest generated kilowatt-hour is often the one never needed.”

M. Stanley Whittingham

United Kingdom / United States · b. 1941

Developed early lithium-ion battery chemistry, a prerequisite for portable electronics and grid storage.

The story

Whittingham’s 1970s Exxon work demonstrated lithium intercalation cells, but safety problems showed why electrochemistry must be engineered beyond a laboratory result.

“Energy density without safe materials is not a finished technology.”

6

Akira Yoshino

Japan · 1948–2025

Built a practical rechargeable lithium-ion battery using safer carbon anodes, enabling later storage industries.

The story

Yoshino’s 1985 prototype used lithium cobalt oxide and petroleum coke, avoiding metallic lithium’s most dangerous behavior and pointing toward commercial cells.

“A practical system often comes from making a brilliant chemistry manufacturable.”

Fatih Birol

Turkey · b. 1958

As executive director of the International Energy Agency, he has shaped the global data and scenarios used by energy planners.

The story

During the 2022 energy crisis, the IEA’s analyses connected security, efficiency and clean-energy deployment rather than treating them as competing goals.

“Infrastructure decisions improve when scenarios make assumptions visible.”

Ellen Williams

United States · b. 1953

A physicist and ARPA-E director who funded high-risk energy technologies and linked research to deployment challenges.

The story

At ARPA-E, Williams backed programs designed to cross the gap between scientific promise and systems that utilities or manufacturers could adopt.

“Fund the difficult bridge between a device and a deployable system.”

The argument

Whether renewable projects are inherently local environmental wins is contested: turbines, dams, mines and transmission lines impose real local costs even when they reduce fossil emissions overall.

Historians also debate how much rapid cost decline came from invention versus policy-created markets, manufacturing scale and global supply chains; all four mattered.
