Cybersecurity has no single global licence, but it has clear foundations: networking, operating systems, identity and the ability to document evidence. Most entrants build those foundations through a computer-science, IT or engineering program, then gain practical experience in systems administration, software or support before specializing.

Hiring screens differ by role. A cloud-security engineer may face architecture questions, an analyst may investigate a log set, and a penetration tester may be asked to demonstrate a lab. Across them all, a portfolio of ethical, authorized work is more credible than claims of having 'hacked' something.

    Computing foundations

    1–2 yrs

    Learn networking, Linux or Windows administration, programming basics and how identity systems work.

A four-year degree can range from low-fee public education to expensive private tuition depending on country. Entry certificates and lab subscriptions add smaller recurring costs; a portfolio built with free tools and authorized platforms can reduce the cash barrier, but not the time required to build fundamentals.
