Volleyball's most prestigious title, contested every four years since the 1964 Tokyo Games. Twelve men's and twelve women's teams qualify through world rankings and continental routes, playing a pool stage into a single-elimination knockout. Olympic gold outranks every other honour in the sport, and dynasties are measured by it - the Soviet Union, Cuba, Brazil, the United States, France and Italy have all reached the summit. The beach game has been a separate Olympic event since 1996.

The sport's second pillar, historically staged every four years and expanded over time to as many as 24 or 32 teams. The Soviet Union and Russia dominated the early history on both sides, with Italy, Brazil, Poland and the United States among later champions. From 2025 FIVB moved the championship to a shorter, more frequent cycle to raise its profile, hosting the men's event in the Philippines and the women's in Thailand as part of a broader calendar overhaul.

An annual, season-long competition for the top national teams, the VNL replaced the men's World League, run from 1990 to 2017, and the women's World Grand Prix, run from 1993 to 2017. Sixteen to eighteen teams play a round-robin across multiple host cities before a knockout finals week, offering ranking points and prize money. It has quickly become the premier yearly gauge of national-team strength between Olympics and World Championships, with Brazil, Poland, France, the United States, Italy and China regular contenders.

European club volleyball's flagship, contested since 1959 and the strongest club competition in the world. Powerhouse teams from Italy, Poland, Russia and Turkey - the men's Zenit Kazan and the women's Vakifbank and Fenerbahce among them - have made it the stage where the best professionals meet outside the international season. Winning it is the pinnacle of the club game, and its MVP awards feature prominently in players' resumes, from Wilfredo Leon to Zhu Ting.

Long regarded as the strongest men's club league on earth, Italy's top flight - rebranded SuperLega - has drawn the world's best players for decades, powered by the money and structure that emerged in the 1990s. Clubs such as Modena, Trentino, Perugia and Civitanova have dominated European competition. The league's technical standard, deep rosters and passionate arenas make it the benchmark professional environment in the men's game.

The commercial powerhouse of men's club volleyball, Poland's PlusLiga routinely fills large arenas and draws some of the sport's biggest television audiences, reflecting volleyball's status as a leading national sport. Clubs like ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle have won European titles, and the league's atmosphere and investment have helped make Poland a men's superpower, world champions in 2014 and 2018. Its blend of crowds, money and quality rivals Italy at the top of the club game.

The global circuit of the two-player sand game, evolving from the first FIVB-sanctioned events of the late 1980s into today's Beach Pro Tour. Played on courts of 16 by 8 metres with sets to 21 points, beach volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1996 and sustains its own stars and rivalries. The tour crowns world-tour champions annually and, alongside the Beach World Championships, forms the elite pathway that feeds Olympic qualification.
