Antwerp diamond heist investigation

The investigation is a Belgian criminal case that began with empty boxes and a discarded bag of paper.

Steps below are what agencies did after the weekend, not how a vault is defeated.

Agencies

• Federal Judicial Police (Belgium) — Lead criminal investigation of the Diamond Centre loss and the Brussels-woods discard.
• Antwerp public prosecutor — Charged Notarbartolo and co-defendants and took the case to trial.
• Diamond Centre / district bodies — Victim building and trade organisations that listed tenant losses and later reviewed access rules.
• Insurers and gem-trade channels — Circulated loss notices so recut or resold stones might be flagged — with limited public success.

What followed

1. List the empty boxes

   Police and tenants documented which boxes were opened and what owners claimed had been inside.

2. Treat the woods find

   The discarded papers and tape near Brussels became the main physical lead to a building tenant.

3. Arrest and charge

   Notarbartolo and others were arrested or sought. Belgian prosecutors built a conspiracy and theft case.

4. Try the crew in Antwerp

   Convictions and sentences followed, including some in absentia. Prison time began for those in custody.

5. Watch the trade

   Loss notices went into diamond-trade and insurance channels. Public recoveries of the 2003 lot remained rare.

6. Live with a mixed file

   After appeals and interviews, the official story still splits: names in court, stones outstanding.

Turning points

• The Brussels-woods discard — Without that find, the case might have stayed an unnamed vault mystery. With it, a tenant entered the dock.
• Antwerp convictions — Sentences moved the dossier out of the unsolved column even though the goods did not return.
• The English book wave — Wired and Flawless made a Belgian trial a global heist story — and tempted later writers to linger on method, which this atlas will not.

After the fact, Belgian justice named a crew. It could not make loose diamonds report back to 2003.
