Penguin is one of 24 types in this animals atlas. The pages treat it as a full system -- history, anatomy, operating principles, culture, icons, future pressure and market shape -- not a ranking of a best species.
Scores compare the penguin with the other 23 types on speed, intelligence, range, resilience, cultural impact and ecological role. They are relative editorial marks. Resilience high means more secure; low means threatened. African and several crested penguins are Endangered; emperors were uplisted as climate models tightened.
Seven chapters follow: origins, systems, how the animal works, cultural life, named icons, what conservation can still change, and how tourism, conflict, fisheries and parks move money.
Deep introduction
Deep dive: Penguin
Penguin is not a single postcard animal. It is a set of populations, subspecies and human rules inside the birds family of this atlas.
Diversity, bodies, culture and ranges — plus a lens tuned to this language region.
Diversity inside the type
Field guides collapse many lineages into the English word penguin. Subspecies, flyways and captive lines do not share one fate -- bald eagles and Philippine eagles, or western and mountain gorillas, are the caution.
This atlas picks a Wikipedia title as the hero image and then keeps the rest of the grade in view so a recovered stock cannot launder a CR cousin.
Life in the landscape
A fusiform trunk, flattened flipper-wing and rear-set feet. Feathers are short and dense; air trapped in the plumage is both insulation and buoyancy that must be managed on a dive.
Pursuit-diving on fish, squid and krill. Porpoising commutes and, in emperors, long fasts on the ice while the partner forages.
Culture and meaning
English-language culture met the penguin through film, law, heraldry and zoos. Those portrayals move money and sometimes take; they are not a field census.
The culture chapter dates posters and statutes so a 1975 film or a 1961 logo cannot pretend to be a 2020s Red List.
Conservation and money
African and several crested penguins are Endangered; emperors were uplisted as climate models tightened.
Tourism, conflict payments, quotas and captive loans are dated economic bands in the market chapter -- not live prices and not a best-species prize.
Life-science deep dive
Biology deep dive: Penguin
Penguin biology is a stack of structure, energy, sensing and hard limits. The four sections below are the same headings used across the atlas so types can be compared without a best-species frame.
Anatomy, senses, behaviour and limits — plus field language for this region.
Structure
A fusiform trunk, flattened flipper-wing and rear-set feet. Feathers are short and dense; air trapped in the plumage is both insulation and buoyancy that must be managed on a dive.
Load paths and tissues (not metals) are expanded in the anatomy chapter.
Energy and foraging
Pursuit-diving on fish, squid and krill. Porpoising commutes and, in emperors, long fasts on the ice while the partner forages.
The how-it-works diagrams reduce that budget to a six-node loop.
Senses and control
Underwater vision tuned to low green-blue light. Salt glands handle seawater; magnetic and solar cues are proposed for long commutes.
Control here means the animal steering itself -- not a vehicle ECU.
Limits
Flightlessness forbids easy island-hopping away from mice, dogs and heat. Surface water warming shifts prey beyond commute range.
Resilience scores encode those limits relative to the other 23 types.
Dark dorsum, white venter — camouflage from above and below in open water.
Porpoising
Leaping breaths on a commute that cut drag versus surface swimming.
Huddle
Emperor males pack to share heat through the Antarctic night incubation.
Guano island
Historic harvest sites (Ichaboe, Peru) that also marked African and Humboldt colonies.
SANCCOB
Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds — oil-spill rehab since 1968.
Krill fishery overlap
CCAMLR catch rules sit next to chinstrap and Adélie foraging maps.
Habitat and movement
Where the penguin breeds and feeds is the first constraint. Single lakes, islands and forests appear again in the history timeline.
Range scores in this atlas mark how widely that movement runs -- albatross and blue whale high, koi and panda low -- not a quality ranking.
Research and law
Named projects (Project Tiger, ACAP, ICCAT, Amboseli) are the English-language bureaucracy of the type.
Listings and downlists are dated events in the timeline, not eternal essences.
Culture and price
Film, auction and logo years are filed under culture and market so they cannot masquerade as demography.
The icons chapter keeps eight real Wikipedia titles so a later language pack can attach the same faces.

No. Galápagos penguins breed on the equator. African penguins nest on Namibian and South African islands. Antarctica holds the emperors and Adélies, not the whole family.
How deep do emperor penguins dive?
Tagged emperors have exceeded 500 m and stayed down more than 20 minutes. That is a seal-like performance on a bird lung.
Why did March of the Penguins matter?
Luc Jacquet’s 2005 film made Aptenodytes forsteri a global winter story. Scientists later argued the narration over-moralised a physiological commute.
What did the 2000 Treasure oil spill show?
About 19,000 African penguins were oiled near Cape Town. SANCCOB and volunteers ran one of the largest bird-rehab operations recorded.
Do all penguins huddle?
The tight thermoregulatory huddle is an emperor (and some king) story. Burrowing little penguins and tree-nesting gentoos use different heat tricks.
Is the African penguin collapsing?
Yes on a decadal clock. Purse-seine competition and shifting sardine/anchovy biomass cut South African colonies by large fractions since the 1950s peak.
Can penguins drink seawater?
Salt glands above the eye dump NaCl as a concentrated drip from the bill — the same avian gadget albatrosses use.
Why are crested penguins in trouble?
Erect-crested and others depend on stable subantarctic fisheries and nest sites. Mice on Gough and other islands add a predation problem flightless birds cannot fly away from.
