Diversity inside the type
Field guides collapse many lineages into the English word albatross. Subspecies, flyways and captive lines do not share one fate -- bald eagles and Philippine eagles, or western and mountain gorillas, are the caution.
This atlas picks a Wikipedia title as the hero image and then keeps the rest of the grade in view so a recovered stock cannot launder a CR cousin.

How does dynamic soaring let an albatross fly cheaply?
The bird climbs and dives through wind-speed gradients above waves, converting shear into airspeed. Heart-rate loggers show travel costs closer to rest than to flapping flight.
Who is Wisdom the Laysan albatross?
A female banded in 1956 by Chandler Robbins at Midway. She has fledged chicks into her seventh decade — a longevity record that made a single band number famous.
Why are longlines the central threat?
Baited hooks look like squid. One set can kill dozens of birds. Night setting, weighted lines and tori lines cut the kill when fleets actually use them.
What did Coleridge actually do to the bird?
The 1798 Rime made killing an albatross a moral crime. The poem outran the biology and still titles newspaper bycatch stories.
Why is Taiaroa Head important?
The northern royal albatross colony near Dunedin is a mainland breeding site with public hides — rare for a family that usually needs remote islands.
Do mice really eat albatross chicks?
On Gough and some other islands, introduced house mice attack chicks of albatrosses and petrels. Eradication attempts are now as central as hook rules.
Is Midway only a battle history?
The atoll is also the world’s largest Laysan albatross colony. Plastic and lead paint joined the WWII ruins as management files.
How many albatross species are threatened?
BirdLife assessments have long placed a majority of Diomedeidae in threatened categories — an unusual concentration for a small family.
