Eagle is one of 24 types in this animals atlas. The pages treat it as a full system -- history, anatomy, operating principles, culture, icons, future pressure and market shape -- not a ranking of a best species.
Scores compare the eagle with the other 23 types on speed, intelligence, range, resilience, cultural impact and ecological role. They are relative editorial marks. Resilience high means more secure; low means threatened. Bald eagle recovered to Least Concern after 2007 delisting; Philippine eagle remains Critically Endangered.
Seven chapters follow: origins, systems, how the animal works, cultural life, named icons, what conservation can still change, and how tourism, conflict, fisheries and parks move money.
Deep introduction
Deep dive: Eagle
Eagle is not a single postcard animal. It is a set of populations, subspecies and human rules inside the birds family of this atlas.
Diversity, bodies, culture and ranges — plus a lens tuned to this language region.
Diversity inside the type
Field guides collapse many lineages into the English word eagle. Subspecies, flyways and captive lines do not share one fate -- bald eagles and Philippine eagles, or western and mountain gorillas, are the caution.
This atlas picks a Wikipedia title as the hero image and then keeps the rest of the grade in view so a recovered stock cannot launder a CR cousin.
Life in the landscape
A fused carpometacarpus, large ungual talons and a hooked bill define the killing kit. Sea eagles add a heavier tarsus for fish; booted eagles add feathered tarsi for cold and mammal prey.
Sit-and-wait on a commanding perch, then a short powered chase or a long stoop. Kleptoparasitism on ospreys saves hunt energy on salmon rivers.
Culture and meaning
English-language culture met the eagle through film, law, heraldry and zoos. Those portrayals move money and sometimes take; they are not a field census.
The culture chapter dates posters and statutes so a 1975 film or a 1961 logo cannot pretend to be a 2020s Red List.
Conservation and money
Bald eagle recovered to Least Concern after 2007 delisting; Philippine eagle remains Critically Endangered.
Tourism, conflict payments, quotas and captive loans are dated economic bands in the market chapter -- not live prices and not a best-species prize.
Life-science deep dive
Biology deep dive: Eagle
Eagle biology is a stack of structure, energy, sensing and hard limits. The four sections below are the same headings used across the atlas so types can be compared without a best-species frame.
Anatomy, senses, behaviour and limits — plus field language for this region.
Structure
A fused carpometacarpus, large ungual talons and a hooked bill define the killing kit. Sea eagles add a heavier tarsus for fish; booted eagles add feathered tarsi for cold and mammal prey.
Load paths and tissues (not metals) are expanded in the anatomy chapter.
Energy and foraging
Sit-and-wait on a commanding perch, then a short powered chase or a long stoop. Kleptoparasitism on ospreys saves hunt energy on salmon rivers.
The how-it-works diagrams reduce that budget to a six-node loop.
Senses and control
A fovea dense with cone cells supports high-acuity prey detection at distance. Oil droplets and a pecten oculi are the usual avian optical extras.
Control here means the animal steering itself -- not a vehicle ECU.
Limits
Wing loading limits closed-canopy pursuit. Lead, rodenticides and turbine blades are modern ceilings that talons cannot solve.
Resilience scores encode those limits relative to the other 23 types.
Four other atlas types, six terms, three threads and three local notes -- a map out of the eagle page without leaving the 24-id taxonomy.
See-also species, key terms, adjacent threads and regional notes for this language.

Key terms
Stoop
High-speed dive with wings folded — golden eagles have been timed above 240 km/h in trained flights.
Aquila
Genus of “true eagles” — golden, imperial and wedge-tailed lineages.
Haliaeetus
Sea-eagle genus — bald, white-tailed and Steller’s — often fish-first.
Eyries
Cliff or super-canopy nests reused for decades; some exceed two metres across.
Kleptoparasitism
Food theft — bald eagles routinely rob ospreys on salmon rivers.
DDT eggshell thinning
1960s–70s collapse mechanism reversed after the 1972 US DDT ban.
Habitat and movement
Where the eagle breeds and feeds is the first constraint. Single lakes, islands and forests appear again in the history timeline.
Range scores in this atlas mark how widely that movement runs -- albatross and blue whale high, koi and panda low -- not a quality ranking.
Research and law
Named projects (Project Tiger, ACAP, ICCAT, Amboseli) are the English-language bureaucracy of the type.
Listings and downlists are dated events in the timeline, not eternal essences.
Culture and price
Film, auction and logo years are filed under culture and market so they cannot masquerade as demography.
The icons chapter keeps eight real Wikipedia titles so a later language pack can attach the same faces.

Why do bald eagles show a white head only as adults?
The white head and tail typically appear after four to five years. Juveniles are mottled brown, which reduced historical miscounts in winter surveys.
How fast is an eagle stoop compared with level flight?
Level cruising for large eagles is often 50–80 km/h. A hunting stoop is a different regime — trained golden eagles have been filmed above 240 km/h.
Did DDT almost erase North American bald eagles?
By 1963 the lower-48 count was about 417 nesting pairs. The 1972 DDT ban plus Endangered Species Act protection preceded the 2007 delisting.
Are “eagle” species one lineage?
No. “Eagle” is a grade inside Accipitridae. Sea eagles (Haliaeetus) and booted eagles (Aquila) split tens of millions of years ago.
Why is the Philippine eagle a different conservation story?
Pithecophaga jefferyi is a forest-interior endemic with perhaps a few hundred adults. Logging and shooting, not eggshell thinning, dominate the threat list.
Do eagles mate for life?
Many pairs are socially monogamous and reuse eyries, but extra-pair behaviour and mate replacement after nest failure are documented.
What do white-tailed eagles eat in the UK reintroduction?
Fish, seabirds and carrion dominate. Isle of Mull and Isle of Wight releases (from 1975 and 2019 programmes) track sheep-loss complaints against actual diet data.
Is the bald eagle only a US bird?
Breeding spans Alaska to northern Mexico and both coasts of Canada. The US recovery is the famous chapter, not the whole range.
