Salmon is not a single postcard animal. It is a set of populations, subspecies and human rules inside the fish family of this atlas.

Diversity, bodies, culture and ranges — plus a lens tuned to this language region.

Diversity inside the type

Field guides collapse many lineages into the English word salmon. Subspecies, flyways and captive lines do not share one fate -- bald eagles and Philippine eagles, or western and mountain gorillas, are the caution.

This atlas picks a Wikipedia title as the hero image and then keeps the rest of the grade in view so a recovered stock cannot launder a CR cousin.

Life in the landscape

An adipose-finned salmonid with a kype in breeding males. Osmoregulatory gills and kidney switch twice -- downriver as smolts, upriver as adults.

Marine fat built on plankton and forage fish, then spent on the upstream fast. Semelparous Pacific bodies become the forest fertiliser.

Culture and meaning

English-language culture met the salmon through film, law, heraldry and zoos. Those portrayals move money and sometimes take; they are not a field census.

The culture chapter dates posters and statutes so a 1975 film or a 1961 logo cannot pretend to be a 2020s Red List.

Conservation and money

Some Pacific stocks remain productive; many Atlantic and southern-US Chinook runs are endangered or extirpated behind dams.

Tourism, conflict payments, quotas and captive loans are dated economic bands in the market chapter -- not live prices and not a best-species prize.

Frequently asked questions

Do all salmon die after spawning?
Most Oncorhynchus (Pacific) are semelparous. Salmo salar can spawn more than once. The postcard of corpses on gravel is a Pacific-weighted image.
Why do forests need salmon?
Isotope studies show marine nitrogen in riparian trees and songbirds. Bears and eagles are the visible vectors; the trees keep the receipt.
What did the Elwha dam removals show?
After 2011-14, sediment flushed and salmon recolonised reaches above the old dams faster than some models feared -- a rare full-height teardown.
Are hatcheries a solution or a delay?
They keep harvest numbers up and can dilute wild fitness. The argument is now about proportions, not existence.
Why are Atlantic salmon a different politics?
Wild S. salar collapsed in much of Europe and New England. Farmed Atlantic salmon in net pens are a separate industry with sea-louse and escape files.
What is the Alaska exception?
Many Alaska runs are still large and limited-entry managed. That success is not transferable to a heavily dammed Columbia without the same habitat.
How do salmon find a home river?
Olfactory imprinting on natal water plus celestial and magnetic cues. A ladder that smells wrong is a closed door.
Did Boldt (1974) change more than courtrooms?
US v. Washington affirmed treaty harvest shares for tribes. Allocation, not biology, became the daily salmon fight in Puget Sound.
