🏏Competitions

Cricket · The bat-and-ball contest where a single match can last five days and still turn on one ball.

Cricket's calendar is organized around international tournaments run by the ICC and a fast-growing tier of domestic franchise leagues. The fifty-over World Cup remains the pinnacle of one-day cricket, but the T20 World Cup and the World Test Championship now give each format its own global title and a clear summit to aim for.

Alongside them, city-based T20 leagues led by the Indian Premier League have become economic powerhouses, while historic contests such as the Ashes and domestic championships preserve the first-class tradition. Together they form a year-round ecosystem that few other sports can match for variety and reach.

ICC Cricket World Cup

World Championship
Founded 1975Global

The fifty-over World Cup is cricket's oldest and most prestigious global title, held every four years. West Indies won the first two editions before Australia established record dominance with six titles between 1987 and 2023. India's 2011 win at home and their 2023 final defeat to Australia before more than 90,000 in Ahmedabad rank among the sport's biggest occasions. Qualification draws in associate nations, but the trophy has stayed among the traditional powers.

ICC T20 World Cup

World Championship
Founded 2007Global

The Twenty20 World Cup was launched in 2007 and won by India, who beat Pakistan in a thrilling final at Johannesburg. Held roughly every two years, it is the ICC's fastest-growing event, expanding to 20 teams and co-hosted by the United States and West Indies in 2024, when India won again in Barbados. West Indies are the only two-time men's champions. Its short format makes it the ICC's chief tool for spreading the game to new markets.

ICC World Test Championship

World Championship
Founded 2019Global

The World Test Championship gave the five-day game its first structured global title, running over a two-year cycle of bilateral series that culminates in a single final at a neutral venue. New Zealand won the inaugural edition in 2021, Australia the second in 2023, and South Africa the third in 2025 at Lord's. By tying Test series to championship points, it has added jeopardy and context to matches that once stood alone.

Indian Premier League

Franchise T20
Founded 2008India / Global

The IPL is the richest and most influential cricket competition on earth, a city-based Twenty20 league whose 2023-27 media rights sold for around 6.2 billion dollars. Ten franchises contest a season each spring, with Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings each winning five titles. It draws the world's best players, sets the template for leagues worldwide, and its auction and celebrity culture have reshaped cricket's economics and the global calendar.

The Ashes

Test rivalry
Founded 1882England / Australia

The Ashes is cricket's oldest and most storied Test rivalry, contested between England and Australia for a tiny terracotta urn since a mock obituary for English cricket in 1882. Played as a five-Test series roughly every two years, alternating between the two countries, it carries a weight of history no other bilateral contest matches. The 2005 series, won narrowly by England, is often cited as the greatest ever played.

Big Bash League

Franchise T20
Founded 2011Australia

Australia's Big Bash League is a city-based Twenty20 competition played through the southern summer, built around eight franchises and pitched as family entertainment in the school holidays. It helped popularize innovations such as tactical substitutions and drew large free-to-air television audiences, establishing itself as one of the strongest domestic T20 leagues outside India and a key showcase for Australian and overseas talent.

County Championship

Domestic first-class
Founded 1890England

The County Championship is England's first-class domestic competition, contested by 18 counties across two divisions over a long red-ball season. Founded in 1890, it is the historic nursery of English Test cricketers and a bastion of the multi-day game. Though overshadowed commercially by the T20 Blast and The Hundred, it remains central to the development of technique and temperament for the longer formats.
