For two weeks every four years it commands a global audience no other participation sport can match, and Los Angeles 2028 will stage that spectacle in the sport's most lucrative market. The anxiety is what happens in the 206 weeks in between, when even champions can struggle for income and visibility. The experiments now under way — Olympic prize money, breakaway leagues, city-centre meets, prize-rich marathon series — are all attempts to monetise that attention, and the coming years will reveal whether any of them works or whether the sport remains, financially, a festival that empties out between Games.
The technological and ethical questions will not resolve so cleanly. Super-shoes, pacing lights and ever-faster tracks keep pushing records down while raising the uncomfortable question of how much a modern mark can be compared with an older one. Doping enforcement has grown more sophisticated, but the suspicion it exists to answer never fully lifts. And the eligibility debate over sex and testosterone touches values far beyond sport. What will not change is the thing that has held since 776 BC: the appeal of finding out, under fair and measured conditions, who can run fastest, jump highest and throw furthest. As long as those questions have answers expressed in seconds and centimetres, athletics will endure — arguing, as ever, about exactly what the numbers mean.
