简短问答

Do you need a PhD to become a professor?

At research universities, almost always: the doctorate is the profession's baseline credential in nearly every country. The main exceptions are professors of practice — distinguished judges, architects, artists or executives appointed to teach their craft — and some conservatoire and fine-arts traditions where a professional reputation substitutes for a doctorate. German-speaking systems historically demanded even more: a second, post-doctoral thesis called the Habilitation.

How long does it take to become a professor?

Typically ten to fifteen years after secondary school: a bachelor's degree of three to four years, a doctorate of four to seven, then two to six years of postdoctoral or fixed-term posts before a first permanent appointment. Tenure or an equivalent permanent status usually arrives in a candidate's mid-to-late thirties, and in German-speaking and some Asian systems often later still.

What is tenure, and why does it matter?

Tenure is an indefinite appointment that can be revoked only for serious cause, designed to protect scholars who publish unpopular findings. The American standard was set by the AAUP's 1940 Statement of Principles, typically after a six-year probation and an up-or-out review. Other systems protect professors differently: German professors are civil servants, while the UK abolished formal tenure in its 1988 Education Reform Act.

What is the difference between assistant, associate and full professor?

In the North American system they are career ranks: assistant professors are on probation for tenure, associate professors have usually just earned it, and full professors have passed a second promotion review. In the UK and much of the Commonwealth, the ladder runs lecturer, senior lecturer, reader, professor — so "professor" there means only the top rank, not any university teacher.

How much do professors earn?

It varies more by country and rank than most people expect. US full professors averaged roughly $150,000–$170,000 in 2024, with Swiss chairs among the world's best paid at over CHF 200,000; UK professors typically earn £75,000–£100,000, and Indian government-university professors around ₹25–35 lakh. At the other pole, US adjuncts teaching per course commonly receive only $3,000–$4,000 per class.

Do professors spend more time teaching or doing research?

It depends entirely on the institution. A research-university post is nominally split roughly 40 percent research, 40 percent teaching and 20 percent service, though grant deadlines routinely bend that. Teaching-focused institutions can assign four or more courses per term, leaving research to evenings. Faculty time-use surveys in several countries consistently report total working weeks of fifty hours or more across both kinds of job.

Becoming a professor is less a course of study than a tournament: every stage admits far more people than the next stage has places for, and the winnowing runs from undergraduate seminars to the tenure review. The credential sequence — bachelor's, doctorate, temporary research posts, permanent appointment — is nearly universal, but the odds attached to each arrow vary enormously by field and country.

The single most important fact about the pipeline is the imbalance at its end: universities in most rich countries produce several times more doctorates than they will ever hire into permanent posts. That is not a reason to avoid the path — the doctorate feeds many careers — but everyone who enters it deserves to know the base rates before a decade of their life is priced in.

入行路线图

  1. 1

    Bachelor's degree

    3–4 yrs

An undergraduate degree, usually in or near the discipline to be professed. The decisive extras are research exposure — a thesis, a lab placement, a professor who becomes a mentor — since graduate admissions read for research promise, not just grades.

门槛Grades, research experience and reference letters strong enough for admission to a good graduate program.

  2. 2

    Master's or research entry

    1–2 yrs

In much of Europe and Asia a research master's precedes the doctorate; North American programs typically fold it into the PhD. Either way, this is where a student first produces a piece of original scholarship and picks the specialty that may define decades.

门槛Admission to a doctoral program — in practice a funding decision, since an unfunded doctorate is a warning sign in most fields.

  3. 3

    Doctorate (PhD)

    4–7 yrs

The profession's defining apprenticeship: years of supervised original research, written into a dissertation that must contribute something genuinely new. Alongside it, most candidates teach — grading, running seminars, sometimes lecturing — and try to publish their first journal articles.

门槛Qualifying or comprehensive examinations partway through, then the dissertation defense — the public examination that has ended the road since the Middle Ages.

  4. 4

    Postdoc and fixed-term years

    2–6 yrs

In the sciences almost mandatory, and increasingly common elsewhere: one or more temporary research positions, often in other countries, spent converting the dissertation into publications and building an independent research identity. This is where most academic careers quietly end or pivot.

门槛A publication record and fellowships competitive enough to survive the next application round — the market's continuous, unforgiving filter.

  5. 5

    First permanent post

≈1 yr to land, often several attempts

Assistant professor in North America, lecturer in the UK and Commonwealth, maître de conférences in France, Juniorprofessor in Germany. Openings are national or global competitions; hundreds of applications for one post is normal in oversupplied fields.

门槛The academic job market itself — a campus shortlist of three or four candidates from a stack of hundreds, decided by research record, references and the interview seminar.

  6. 6

    Tenure, Habilitation and the chair

    5–7 yrs more

North American assistant professors face an up-or-out tenure review around year six, judged on publications, external expert letters, grants and teaching. German-speaking systems historically required the Habilitation — a second thesis — before a full professorship; promotion to full professor or a named chair follows years later.

门槛The tenure or appointment review: external referees asked, in writing, whether the candidate is among the leaders of their generation in the field.

Cost of entry $0 tuition, ~10 lean years

In most systems the doctorate itself is not bought but worked for: US research programs typically waive tuition and pay stipends of roughly $25,000–$45,000 (2024), UK research-council studentships pay about £19,000 tax-free, and German doctoral researchers hold salaried part-time staff contracts. The real price is time — eight to twelve years of below-market earnings through the PhD and postdoc years, against peers compounding salaries in industry — plus self-funding risk in the humanities, where full funding is scarcest.

该学什么

The discipline itself

The major becomes the career

Unlike medicine or law, professing has no separate professional school: the undergraduate subject typically becomes the research field. The practical advice is to choose the discipline whose unsolved problems can hold attention for thirty years, then get research experience in it early.

Mathematics

The most portable foundation

Mathematical training underpins academic careers across physics, economics, computer science, statistics and engineering, and mathematics departments themselves maintain one of the healthier ratios of doctoral graduates to academic openings among the pure disciplines.

Biology and life sciences

The largest research enterprise

The life sciences produce more PhDs than any other field cluster and absorb the largest share of public research funding, but the postdoc bottleneck is correspondingly severe — multiple multi-year postdocs before a faculty post is now the norm rather than the exception.

Economics

Unusually strong academic market

Economics runs a famously structured annual job market with genuine demand from universities, central banks and international institutions, and its new PhDs enjoy better permanent-placement rates and pay than almost any other social science or humanities discipline.

English and literature

The classic humanities route — eyes open

Literary study remains a central path into the professoriate and its training transfers well to publishing, media and law. But it is also the market's cautionary tale: single tenure-track openings routinely draw several hundred applicants, so a backup plan is part of the curriculum.

哪里教得最好

University of Bologna

Italy

Europe's oldest university, founded 1088 as a guild of students — and the institution that appointed Laura Bassi, the world's first salaried woman professor, in 1732.

University of Oxford

United Kingdom

Teaching since the twelfth century; its tutorial system and endowed chairs — some dating to 1540 — remain a distinct, personal model of the professor's craft.

Humboldt University of Berlin

Germany

The 1810 original of the research university: the institution that fused teaching with original research and defined the modern professorship for the whole world.

École Normale Supérieure (ENS-PSL)

France

Literally a school for training teachers, and pound for pound one of the world's most effective scholar factories — its alumni include more than a dozen Nobel laureates and most of France's Fields medalists.

Harvard University

United States

North America's oldest university (1636) and the largest single producer of future faculty for the US market; its tenure decisions are watched as a bellwether across American academia.

University of Tokyo

Japan

Japan's most prestigious university and historically the dominant feeder of professors into the country's national universities and research institutes.

National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)

Mexico

Latin America's largest university, whose main campus is a UNESCO World Heritage site; a primary training ground for the Spanish-speaking world's professoriate.

University of Cape Town

South Africa

Africa's highest-ranked research university and a major doctoral trainer for the continent, where faculty shortages make each new PhD disproportionately consequential.

执照与考试

Doctorate (PhD)

Worldwide

The profession's near-universal license: a supervised original contribution to knowledge, defended in public. Its direct ancestors are the medieval licentia docendi and the Islamic ijazah — both, literally, licenses to teach — and virtually no research university anywhere now appoints permanent faculty without it.

Habilitation

Germany, Austria, Switzerland & central Europe

A second, post-doctoral thesis and examination granting the venia legendi — the right to lecture in a discipline. Long the absolute prerequisite for a German chair, it is slowly loosening as Juniorprofessur tenure-track routes spread, but it still shapes German-speaking academic careers and timelines.

CNU qualification

France

Before applying for a permanent maître de conférences or professorship in France, candidates must be formally "qualified" by the Conseil national des universités, a discipline-by-discipline national board that vets each dossier — a national licensing layer on top of the doctorate that surprises outsiders.

UGC-NET

India

The National Eligibility Test, administered for the University Grants Commission, is the statutory gateway to assistant professorships across Indian universities. Hundreds of thousands sit it each cycle; clearing NET, or holding a PhD under post-2018 regulations, is what legally permits university teaching.

另一条路

Professor of practice

Universities appoint distinguished practitioners — judges, diplomats, architects, editors, executives, artists — to teach their craft without the research pipeline, under titles like professor of practice, clinical professor or industry professor. The route runs through twenty years of eminence elsewhere, not through graduate school, and rarely carries tenure.

The industrial-lab detour

In computer science, engineering and parts of biomedicine, researchers who build strong publication records inside industrial or government laboratories are hired directly into senior professorships. The traffic increasingly runs both ways: the same labs recruit professors out, which keeps universities bidding for people who never held a faculty post.
