$150k–$300k+摘要:US major-airline captains top; FO mid-career lower, 2024 contracts.
摘要:Fatigue risk managed by regulation; time zones erode home life.
Pilot pay is governed by an institution most professions abolished a century ago: the seniority list. At an airline, the date of joining — not performance — determines aircraft, schedule, upgrade timing and therefore income, and seniority does not transfer between airlines, which is why pilots rarely switch employers mid-career and why an airline bankruptcy can reset a 20-year veteran to the bottom of someone else's list.
The result is one of the steepest earnings curves anywhere: a flight instructor building hours may earn less than a bus driver while a senior widebody captain at the same country's flag carrier out-earns most physicians. Post-pandemic contracts pushed the top of the US scale to records, while pay in fast-growing Asian markets is rising from a much lower base.

US, first-year pay after the 2022–23 regional pay deals roughly doubled starting salaries amid the hiring crunch.

Top-of-scale widebody captains at the major airlines, 2024–25; US contracts lead the world after the 2023 pay deals.
Peak expatriate captain packages at Chinese carriers before 2020, tax-equalized; hiring and pay resumed more cautiously after the pandemic.
Lufthansa top-of-scale captains under recent collective agreements; most Western European flag carriers pay senior captains €150k–€250k.
Qantas long-haul captains, 2024; domestic narrowbody captains earn substantially less.
Emirates captain pay, tax-free, plus provided housing and schooling allowances, 2024 — the package that pulls experienced crews to the Gulf.
Senior widebody captains at Air India and IndiGo, 2024–25; junior first officers earn a small fraction, but scales are rising with record aircraft orders.
US major with one of the world's largest pilot seniority lists — well over 15,000 pilots — and the contract that set the post-2023 global pay benchmark.
Dubai's all-widebody long-haul carrier, recruiting experienced captains and first officers from dozens of countries on tax-free packages with housing.
Europe's largest airline by passengers and its biggest single employer of low-hour cadet pilots, hiring across bases from Ireland to Morocco.
India's dominant carrier, holder of record-breaking Airbus orders — including 500 A320-family jets in 2023 — and one of the world's largest future pilot employers.
Australia's flag carrier, operator of some of the world's longest routes and of its own ab initio pilot academy at Toowoomba.
The world's largest cargo airline, whose pilots earn passenger-major pay flying freight overnight — and whose network is where reduced-crew concepts are most likely to appear first.
Boeing's 2024 Pilot and Technician Outlook forecasts about 674,000 new pilots needed worldwide between 2024 and 2043, with the largest shares in Asia and North America; Airbus's forecast runs to a similar order. The drivers are fleet growth in Asia and the Middle East and a mandatory-retirement wave in the mature markets, where the large hiring cohorts of the 1980s and 90s all exit at 65.
Demand is violently cyclical around that trend. US majors hired at record rates in 2022–23 to rebuild from pandemic early-retirements, then slowed sharply in 2024–25 as aircraft delivery delays capped growth — a whiplash familiar to a profession where furloughs and hiring booms have alternated since deregulation. The queue moves in surges, and timing of entry shapes a career as much as talent does.
The structural constraint is the cost of entry. Six-figure self-funded training rations the supply of new pilots in the West, which is why shortages appear at the bottom of the ladder first — regional airlines and flight schools — and why pay at that bottom roughly doubled when the last shortage bit. Where airlines pay for training, as across much of Asia, the bottleneck is training capacity itself: aircraft, simulators and, circularly, instructors.
