Photography is the first profession on this site whose core product a machine can now fake convincingly: generative models produce commercial-grade imagery from a sentence, and the world's biggest stock agency sells AI generation alongside real photographs. For work whose value was 'a plausible picture of a generic thing' — stock scenes, filler headshots, catalogue packshots — the automation is not coming; it has arrived.
But most paid photography was never that. A wedding, a match point, a war crime, a CEO who must look like herself — these require a person present at an unrepeatable event, trusted with access, and able to vouch that the image records something that happened. As fakes become free, that guarantee is becoming the professional photographer's actual product, with cryptographic provenance standards being built into cameras to back it.
Task by task, the exposure is real but uneven. Generic stock, basic product shots, headshots and much retouching are already automated or nearly so; culling and editing are following fast. What resists is presence-dependent work — events, news, sport, documentary — plus the direction of live human subjects and the accountability of a named witness. Roughly half the traditional task list automates; the half that pays for being physically there does not.

The tools in the bag will change completely; the reason clients call — someone must be there, see clearly, and answer for the picture — is the same reason they called in 1936.
The profession's own history is the best forecast: photography has already survived four technological extinctions of its business model, each time by retreating from the tasks machines took and doubling down on judgment, access and authorship. Generative AI is the harshest wave yet, but it attacks the image, not the witness — and the witness was always the job.
