Figure Skating · Four minutes to launch quadruple jumps off a four-millimetre blade and make it look like music.

Strategy in figure skating is layout. A skater cannot react to an opponent, cannot slow the game down and cannot change plan once the music starts; every decision is made weeks earlier, at a desk, with the ISU Scale of Values open. How many quadruple jumps, in what order, which ones in combination, which ones placed after the halfway mark to collect the ten per cent bonus, and how much base value to trade away in exchange for the higher grades of execution a comfortable program attracts — those choices decide most competitions before anyone steps on the ice.

Underneath the arithmetic sits technique, and technique in this sport is almost entirely about edges. A blade has an inside and an outside edge, and can travel forwards or backwards, giving eight basic edges. Which one a skater leaves the ice from, and whether a toe pick is involved, is the entire taxonomy of jumping. The diagrams below map that taxonomy and the structure of the two competition segments; the concepts that follow are the working vocabulary coaches actually use when they build a program.

The six jumps, by take-off edge

Every jump in figure skating is one of six, and the only thing separating them is how the skater leaves the ice. Three are toe jumps, launched by planting the free foot's toe pick: the toe loop from a back outside edge, the flip from a back inside edge, and the Lutz from a back outside edge on a long counter-rotated glide, traditionally taken into a corner. Three are edge jumps, launched from the blade alone: the Salchow from a back inside edge, usually entered from a three-turn; the loop from a back outside edge with the feet crossed; and the Axel, the only jump taken off facing forwards, which is why it contains an extra half rotation. Base values climb in that order, from 9.50 for a quadruple toe loop to 12.50 for a quadruple Axel. The two most-penalised jumps are the Lutz and flip, because a skater whose edge rolls the wrong way at take-off draws an edge call and loses value.

Short program: seven elements in 2:40

The short program is a compliance test. Seven elements are required, no more and no fewer, and anything extra receives no value at all. For senior singles that means three jumping passes — a solo Axel-type jump, a jump combination, and a solo jump immediately preceded by connecting steps — plus three spins of different families, one of which must be a flying entry and one a combination with a change of foot, and a step sequence covering the full ice. There is no room to recover from a missed element, because the layout cannot be rearranged mid-program: a doubled quadruple destroys the combination slot and takes several points off the segment with no way to bank them elsewhere. This is why short-program strategy is usually conservative at the top of the field, and why a skater who leads after 2:40 has often simply been the one who took the least risk.

Free skate layout and the second-half bonus

The free skate permits seven jumping passes across four minutes, and the order they are placed in is worth real points. Jump elements started after the halfway mark receive a 1.1 multiplier on their base value, but since the 2018-19 season only the final three jumping passes qualify, which stopped skaters from back-loading an entire program and turning the last two minutes into a survival exercise. The result is a standard shape: the hardest quadruple jumps go early while the legs are fresh and the technical panel is watching a clean take-off, the mid-program is used for a step sequence and spins to recover breath, and the last three passes — typically a combination, a triple Axel and a triple Lutz or flip — collect the bonus. Stamina decides how ambitious that final third can be, and a fatigued skater loses far more to underrotation calls than to falls.

How one element becomes a score

Every element passes through the same pipeline. The technical panel first identifies it and, for spins, steps and dance elements, assigns a level from B to 4 based on how many difficult features were completed; that fixes the base value from the published Scale of Values. The same panel applies calls that cut value before judging even begins: an underrotation reduces the jump to seventy per cent, a downgrade drops it to the next lower rotation, and a wrong edge on a Lutz or flip reduces the base outright. Nine judges then award a grade of execution from -5 to +5, expressed as a percentage of that element's base value, so quality on a big jump is worth several times quality on a small one. The high and low marks are discarded and the rest averaged. Element scores sum into the Technical Element Score, the factored program components are added, and deductions are subtracted last.

Key concepts

Edges, and why they decide everything

A figure skate blade is not flat. It is ground with a hollow down its length, leaving two edges, so a skater on one foot is always travelling on either the inside or the outside edge, forwards or backwards — eight basic edges in total. Which edge the blade is on at take-off is the entire definition of a jump: a Lutz and a flip are the same movement launched from opposite edges, and the difference between them is a full point of base value at the triple level. Deep, secure edges also underpin the Skating Skills component, because they produce speed without visible effort, and they determine whether a step sequence reaches Level 4. Coaches spend more hours on edge quality than on rotation, because rotation problems are usually edge problems arriving late.

The flutz and the lip

The two most common technical faults in the sport have nicknames. A flutz is a Lutz taken off from the wrong inside edge, effectively turning it into a flip while claiming a Lutz base value; a lip is the reverse, a flip taken off from an outside edge. Both are policed by the technical panel on slow-motion replay, and both are marked with an 'e' that reduces the base value, or a '!' that flags an unclear edge without a cut. The faults are difficult to correct because they are usually learned young, when a skater instinctively rolls onto the easier edge to gain rotation. Skaters have lost world medals to a single 'e' call, and several elite programs are built to avoid the Lutz entirely.

Rotation, air position and the pull-in

A jump's rotation rate is a function of angular momentum and how tightly the skater compresses. Everything a skater generates comes from the take-off; nothing can be added in the air, so a quadruple jump is won or lost in the last quarter-second on the ice. The airborne task is to reach a fully crossed, narrow position as fast as possible — arms pulled tight, hips square, one leg locked over the other — which raises rotation speed to roughly five revolutions per second at the elite level. Variations like the tano, an arm held overhead through the rotation, and its two-armed rippon version deliberately sacrifice some of that compression for grade-of-execution bullets, and are only worth attempting on jumps a skater can already land with rotation to spare.

Base value versus grade of execution

The central strategic trade in the modern sport. A quadruple Salchow is worth 9.70 and a triple Salchow 4.30, so a fallen quad, penalised roughly five points of GOE plus a one-point deduction, still lands close to a clean triple. That maths is why the field attempts jumps it cannot reliably land. The counter-argument is compounding: a skater who is comfortable at their chosen difficulty collects plus-three and plus-four across a whole program, gains around a third of extra value on every element, and holds higher component scores because the skating looks unhurried. Nathan Chen and Yuzuru Hanyu built careers on opposite ends of this trade, and both worked, which is why the balance is still argued about at every federation.

Layout planning and the second-half bonus

Jump elements started after the halfway point of the free skate collect a 1.1 multiplier, but since 2018-19 only the last three jumping passes qualify. That single restriction reshaped the sport. Before it, skaters loaded almost everything into the second half and produced exhausting, structurally lopsided programs; afterwards the standard layout became front-loaded quadruple content, a mid-program breathing space of spins and steps, and three carefully chosen bonus jumps at the end. Choosing which three go last is a stamina calculation: a triple Axel late is worth 8.80 with the bonus, but a triple Axel skated on dead legs is a candidate for an underrotation call that costs more than the bonus provides.

Spin levels and difficult variations

Spins are scored on level, not spectacle. A spin must hold at least eight revolutions in a basic position, and levels rise as the skater adds recognised features: a change of foot, a change of edge, a difficult entry, a difficult variation held for at least eight rotations. The classic level-builders are the Biellmann, in which the free leg is pulled overhead behind the back; the layback with its arched spine; the doughnut, cannonball and pancake sit variations; and the illusion. Because a Level 4 spin costs almost nothing in energy compared with a jump and takes seconds to perform, spins are the most efficient points in the sport, and a skater who leaks levels on spins is effectively giving away free base value.

Step sequences and skating skills

The step sequence is where the technical panel and the judges look at the same thing for different reasons. The panel counts turns — rockers, counters, brackets, twizzles, choctaws — and checks whether the pattern covers the full surface, whether the body is used through the whole sequence, and whether the skater maintains speed and control, awarding a level accordingly. The judges are simultaneously reading the Skating Skills component: depth of edge, effortless power, one-foot skating, clean multi-directional travel. A great step sequence is the most reliable signal of what a skater actually is, because it cannot be faked by athleticism. This is where ice dancers separate themselves from everyone else, and where a singles skater with weak basics is exposed.

Composition and the component gap

Since 2022-23 there are three program components: Composition, Presentation and Skating Skills. Composition rewards purposeful design — pattern, use of the ice surface, phrasing that matches the musical structure rather than merely running alongside it. Presentation covers projection, carriage and the physical expression of the music. In practice, component scores at the elite level cluster between 8.5 and 9.75, a narrow band that critics call reputation scoring and defenders call an accurate reading of a very small group of genuinely comparable skaters. The practical consequence is that components rarely overturn a technical deficit at a world championship, but they routinely decide the podium when two skaters land the same content.

Ice dance and pairs strategy

The disciplines that skate in twos are scored on different levers. Ice dance has no jumps and no throws, so its points come from key points on pattern dance sections, levelled twizzles, step sequences in hold and not in hold, dance spins and lifts limited to seven seconds for a short lift and twelve for a rotational one. A missed twizzle key point can cost a world title. Pairs balance shared elements — twist lifts, throw jumps, the death spiral, overhead lifts in five groups — against side-by-side jumps and spins judged on unison, which are the most common failure point because two nervous systems must repeat the same jump at the same instant. Pairs layout is therefore a question of how much solo risk to carry.

How it evolved

Every major change in figure skating technique has followed a change in the rules. Compulsory figures kept the sport slow and upright until they were abolished in 1990; the short program, introduced in 1973, forced skaters to become consistent under pressure; the arrival of the ISU Judging System in 2004 made every element's worth public and immediately produced programs engineered around the scale of values, including the notorious wave of back-loaded layouts that the 2018 restriction of the second-half bonus was written to stop. The expansion of grade of execution to a -5 to +5 range in the same reform was an explicit attempt to make quality worth as much as difficulty, and it partially succeeded: the gap between a plus-four quadruple and a fallen one is now large enough to reward restraint.

The current frontier is biomechanical. Quadruple jumps require roughly five rotations per second in the air, and the quadruple Axel demands four and a half turns off a forward take-off, which is why Ilia Malinin's 2022 landing was treated as a barrier falling rather than an incremental gain. Harness training, off-ice rotation rigs and force-plate analysis have industrialised what was once trial and error, and pre-rotation on the ice — starting the turn before the blade leaves the surface — is now the most argued-about technical detail in the sport. The counter-movement is already visible: the legalisation of backflips in 2024, the reduction of components to three, and rising interest in the show circuit all push toward performance value, and the next reform will probably be written to reward it.
