Major honours
This is the country that produced the sport's first-ever world champion. At the inaugural World Professional Darts Championship, held in Nottingham in 1978, Leighton Rees beat John Lowe 11-7 to give Wales its first name in the record books, and four more BDO titles followed: Richie Burnett in 1995, Mark Webster in 2008, and Wayne Warren, the BDO's last champion, in 2020. The PDC-era breakthrough came from Gerwyn Price, a former professional rugby hooker, who beat Gary Anderson 7-3 in the 2021 final to become the first Welsh world champion and also reached world number one. Price, paired with Jonny Clayton, a former plasterer turned full-time pro, won the World Cup of Darts in 2020 and 2023, giving Wales the best national-team record behind England and the Netherlands. The Premier League night at Cardiff's Utilita Arena, with both men on stage together, has become a symbol of Welsh darts.

Rivalry
England is the default opponent. The very first World Championship final was Wales's Rees against England's Lowe, and when Price and Clayton beat England in the 2020 World Cup of Darts final, Wales repaid one of the sport's oldest fixtures.
