Major honours
This is the sport's most unusual programme: the biggest growth market in darts, without ever having produced a world champion. The starting point is 2012, when the PDC European Tour launched. Germany immediately became its most frequent host, filling arenas in Dortmund, Munich, Hildesheim and Berlin with crowds matching or exceeding those in Britain. The European Championship, held at Dortmund's Westfalenhalle, has become the standard-bearer for PDC majors on the European mainland. The high point came in 2023, when Gabriel Clemens became the first German to reach a World Championship semi-final at Alexandra Palace, beating Michael van Gerwen along the way. Before him, Max Hopp brought Germany's first international trophy by winning the 2014 PDC World Youth Championship, and today Martin Schindler has taken up the standard-bearer role, stacking up European Tour wins. German darts' next task is producing a champion to match the size of its crowds.

Rivalry
The Netherlands is the rival on the arena floor. The two countries share European Tour hosting duties and crowds across their shared border, and Germany has yet to make the leap the Netherlands made through a single champion in van Barneveld. For Germany, the Netherlands is both rival and model.
