Major honours
This programme has a vast league participation base but its professional steel-tip results have stalled at a single peak. The starting point is 1975, when the American Darts Organization (ADO) was founded, unifying leagues nationwide under a single structure. The high point came in 1994, when Larry Butler, from Ohio, won the World Matchplay in Blackpool to become the only American to win a PDC major, a record that stood unbroken for more than thirty years. Darin Young and Danny Baggish later held tour cards and competed at the World Championship, and Stacy Bromberg was the leading face of American women's darts. The structural feature of American darts is that most of its leagues are soft-tip, which is one reason its huge participation base has translated poorly into professional steel-tip results. The PDC continues to knock on this market by holding the US Darts Masters at New York's Madison Square Garden, and allocates World Championship qualifying places each year through North American qualifiers.

Rivalry
England is both the opponent and the benchmark. When Butler won in Blackpool in 1994, there was hope American darts was about to break into the steel-tip circuit, but the generations that followed never kept pace, and America's task since has shifted from beating Britain to converting its own vast soft-tip population into steel-tip professionals.
