Frequently asked questions

Are executive functions one ability or many?
Both. Shared variance (“unity”) sits alongside separable updating, inhibition and shifting (“diversity”). Tasks never measure a pure factor — they mix control with speed, language and motivation.
Where in the brain do they live?
Heavily in lateral and medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate and frontoparietal networks — but always in loops with striatum, thalamus and cerebellum. “Frontal only” is a myth.
How is working memory different from short-term store?
Working memory actively maintains and manipulates information for goals; a passive short-term store just holds. Central executive, phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad remain useful Baddeley labels.
Do brain-training apps fix executive function?
Near transfer is common; far transfer to school, work or ADHD outcomes is usually weak. Sleep, exercise, reducing chronic stress and treating underlying disorders outperform most app claims.
How do ADHD and executive function relate?
Many people with ADHD show measurable control and working-memory weaknesses, but executive scores alone do not diagnose ADHD. Motivation, delay aversion and situational supports matter clinically.
Can stress wreck inhibition?
Yes. Acute and chronic stress bias toward habit and amygdala-driven responding, narrowing prefrontal bandwidth. That is biology, not moral failure.
What develops when in childhood?
Inhibitory control and working memory surge across preschool and school years; cognitive flexibility continues refining into adolescence as prefrontal networks myelinate and prune.
Is this the same as IQ?
No. Executive measures correlate with fluid intelligence but capture dynamic control under interference — different predictive profiles for everyday functioning.
