Social cognition is the set of processes that let us infer others’ beliefs, feelings and intentions, track reputation, and coordinate action. It is not a single module but overlapping circuits for faces, bodies, language and value.

Frequently asked questions

Is theory of mind the same as empathy?
No. Theory of mind (mentalising) is inferring beliefs and intentions; empathy includes feeling-with and caring-for. They share circuitry but can dissociate clinically and developmentally.
Where is the “social brain”?
Distributed: medial PFC and temporoparietal junction for mentalising, superior temporal sulcus for biological motion, amygdala for salience and threat, and orbitofrontal cortex for social value.
Do mirror neurons explain social cognition?
They contribute to action understanding hypotheses, but mentalising, language and culture go far beyond motor resonance. Treat “mirror = empathy” headlines with scepticism.
When do children pass false-belief tasks?

What is mentalising versus simulation?

Can social media reshape social cognition?
It changes cue ecology — fewer embodied signals, more reputation metrics — but claims of wholesale “brain rewiring” outrun evidence. Attention and sleep confound many studies.
Is face recognition part of social cognition?
Yes as an enabling skill: fusiform and STS pathways feed identity and expression into higher mentalising and affiliation systems. Prosopagnosia shows how social life suffers without faces.
