Signs of giftedness are cues for curiosity, not a diagnosis and not a caste stamp.
Tests measure a sample already shaped by teaching and invitation. False positives are part of the identification problem.
Early cues
- 3–5 — Early symbol hunger — Letters, numbers or tunes arrive before the school’s timetable. Hunger is a cue; push is a choice.
- 5–7 — Curriculum mismatch — The child finishes the page and waits. Waiting is data for the teacher, not proof of a global gift.
- 8–10 — Self-teaching spikes — Encyclopedias, code, scores or maps consumed without assignment.
- 11–13 — Above-level readiness — The age-grade test is all ceiling. A harder test may be the honest instrument — if offered fairly.
- 14–17 — Identity lock-in — The label can become a job. Some thrive; some freeze for fear of losing the adjective.
Tests & tasks
- Age-grade IQ / achievement — Historic gate. Ceilings hide the tail; content can reward prior teaching.
- Above-level SAT / ACT — SMPY/CTY method for young adolescents. Access depends on who hears the invitation.
- Performance portfolios — Closer to Renzulli’s creative-productive ring than a group IQ sitting.
- Dynamic / trial teaching — See whether enrichment produces growth before a permanent label.
Environments
- Peer intellectual match — Hollingworth’s point: isolation is an educational injury, not a character test.
- Subject acceleration — Stanley’s practical lever when one domain is far ahead.
- Mentored projects — Renzulli’s Type III investigations — real problems, real audiences.
- Twice-exceptional support — Ability services plus disability services, not a forced choice.
False positives
- Tutor polish — A child can look gifted on a test that mirrors last year’s cram school.
- Compliance as ability — Quiet high achievers get nominated; disruptive high reasoners do not.
- Halo of verbal fluency — Talking like an adult is not the same as mathematical or spatial advance.
- One-domain fame — A spelling-bee win is a domain result. It is not a passport to all gifts.
Giftedness: a cue is information. A label without a review date is a caste.
