Research on giftedness runs from Lewis Terman (1921–) through later critiques. Mechanisms are interacting systems.

- 1921– · Lewis Terman — High IQ can predict later schooling His Californians did well in school and professions; creative eminence and demographic breadth were weaker.

Mechanisms
- Aptitude to talent (DMGT) — Natural abilities become systematically developed skills only if practice, personality and environment cooperate.
- Three-ring intersection — Ability without commitment is idle; commitment without creativity can be mere grind; creativity without ability is wish.
- Above-level measurement — Age-grade tests ceiling out. Harder tests reveal residual differences among the already high.
- Asynchrony — Cognitive, social and motor ages can diverge. A label that ignores the split mis-teaches the child.
Evidence
Terman and SMPY are real, long, and sample-limited.
Replicable spread at the tail when ceilings are lifted.
DMGT and three-ring organise programmes; they are not psychometric laws of nature.
Childhood IQ is a weak forecast of later creative production (Simonton’s broader point).
Teacher nomination still misses many students. That is an evidence gap, not a small rounding error.
Debates
- Cutoff versus enrichment for all — Some systems reserve services for a percentile; others enrich first and identify in the work. Both can fail if underfunded.
- Acceleration versus enrichment — Stanley favoured subject acceleration for some SMPY students. Other programmes fear social cost and prefer pull-out projects.
- Gifted as equity problem — If identification tracks prior opportunity, “gifted” becomes a luxury brand. The debate is about gates, not whether mismatch exists.
Giftedness: size the claim to the study. Interaction, not a 50/50 slogan, is the default model.
