Gymnastics · Ten seconds of controlled flight, judged to a tenth of a point, after ten years of daily repetition.

Strategy in gymnastics is the management of a single trade-off: every tenth of difficulty you add is a tenth you must also execute cleanly, and the execution panel is far less forgiving than the difficulty panel is generous. A routine upgraded by 0.4 that costs 0.5 in wobbles and short landings is a net loss. Elite coaches therefore build routines backwards from the execution score they believe an athlete can reliably hold under championship pressure, then add difficulty until that reliability starts to erode.

The second strategic layer is structural. Six apparatus for men and four for women mean that a nation must decide whether to develop all-arounders, who can score in every rotation and contest the sport's blue-riband title, or specialists, who can win an apparatus final and be devastating in a three-up, three-count team final. The diagrams below map the apparatus sets and the anatomy of a score; the concepts that follow are the working vocabulary coaches and judges actually use.

The men's six-apparatus rotation

A men's competition floor is laid out so that squads rotate in a fixed Olympic order: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. The sequence is not arbitrary. Floor opens the rotation because it demands the freshest legs; pommel horse follows as the sport's most brittle apparatus, where a single loss of rhythm ends a routine and where team finals are most often lost. Rings tax pure static strength, vault is a five-second explosion, parallel bars reward swing mechanics and shoulder control, and high bar closes the competition with release moves that draw the biggest crowd reaction and the largest connection bonuses. Because scores are simply added, a men's all-arounder cannot afford a weak apparatus: the difference between a gymnast who scores 14 on pommel horse and one who scores 12.5 is usually the difference between an Olympic medal and eighth place.

The women's four-apparatus rotation

Women rotate vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The order deliberately places the two nerve events in the middle: bars, where a missed release means a fall from three metres, and beam, a ten-centimetre-wide surface on which an entire routine of acrobatic series and dance elements must be delivered inside 90 seconds. Vault opens the rotation because it is short and explosive, and floor closes it because a crowd-facing tumbling routine set to music makes the best finish. A team final is usually decided by beam: it produces more falls than the other three apparatus combined, and with three scores counting and none dropped, the nation that keeps everyone on the apparatus typically wins. All-around specialists must therefore be broad rather than spectacular, since a 15.8 on vault cannot rescue a 12.1 on beam.

How a score is built: D plus E

Since 2006 every routine produces two independent numbers that are added together. The D-score counts the difficulty values of the counting elements — ten for men including the dismount, eight for women — then adds credit for satisfying element group or composition requirements and further credit for connections performed without a pause. It has no ceiling, and elite men's high bar routines now start above 6.0. The E-score begins at 10.00 and only falls, with the five execution judges' highest and lowest marks discarded and the middle three averaged. Neutral deductions for stepping out of bounds, exceeding the time limit or an illegal start are subtracted from the total by the panel chair. The arithmetic explains the sport's central strategic dilemma: difficulty is bought once in the gym, but execution must be paid for on every single repetition.

The five phases of a vault

Vault is the only gymnastics event decided in under six seconds, and it is judged phase by phase. The run-up, up to 25 metres, sets the horizontal speed that will become rotation. The hurdle onto the springboard converts that speed into vertical lift, and the entry — round-off for a Yurchenko, front handspring, or a quarter-turn for a Tsukahara — determines the vault family and therefore its fixed difficulty value. The first flight carries the gymnast onto the table; the repulsion, a block through the shoulders lasting perhaps 0.2 seconds, is where amplitude is won or lost. The second flight contains the saltos and twists, and the landing zone is where the execution panel does most of its work: a small hop costs 0.1, a large step 0.3, hands down 0.5. Judges look for height and distance off the table, because a low, short vault cannot be rescued by a good landing.

Key concepts

D-score construction

Building a difficulty score is a puzzle with fixed pieces. For men, only the ten highest-valued elements count, including the dismount, so an eleventh hard skill adds nothing; for women only eight count. Each apparatus has element groups — swing, strength, release and dismount families on the men's side, acrobatic and dance requirements on the women's — and each satisfied group adds credit, so a routine crammed with elements from a single family scores worse than a balanced one with easier skills. Coaches therefore audit routines element by element, looking for a low-value skill that occupies a counting slot and can be swapped for a harder one at no extra risk. This is where marginal gains live: a well-constructed 6.0 routine and a badly constructed 6.0 routine cost completely different amounts of physical risk to perform.

Execution and the deduction scale

The execution panel works from a fixed tariff rather than an impression. Small faults cost 0.1: a bent knee, separated legs, a flexed foot, a small hop on landing, an arm swing to correct balance. Medium faults cost 0.3, large faults 0.5, and a fall 1.00. Amplitude, body line, leg form and landing precision are assessed on every element, which means a 90-second beam routine can accumulate two full points of deductions without anything visibly going wrong. This is why the very best gymnasts look easy: their advantage is not that they avoid disasters but that they concede fewer 0.1s across thirty separate judgeable moments. Execution is also where careers separate, because difficulty can be trained in months while line and amplitude take a decade.

Connection value and series

The code pays a bonus for elements performed in direct succession without a pause, an extra step or a loss of rhythm. On high bar, linking two release moves — a Cassina straight into a Kovacs, for instance — can add several tenths, and Epke Zonderland's 2012 Olympic gold was built on a three-release chain no one else attempted. On beam, an acrobatic series of a back handspring into a layout stepout earns connection credit that a gymnast who takes a settling step loses entirely. Connections are the highest-variance component of a D-score: they are worth the most per unit of extra skill, but the moment a gymnast pauses to gather themselves the bonus vanishes while the risk has already been taken.

Amplitude and the stuck landing

Amplitude is the height, distance and openness a gymnast achieves within an element, and it is the single quality that most distinguishes elite execution. A double layout performed at head height is the same element as one performed two metres above the floor, but the judges see them very differently and the deductions follow. Amplitude also buys time: a higher salto gives more milliseconds to spot the floor and prepare the landing. The stuck landing — feet planted, no step, no arm swing, no hop — is the visible payoff and the cheapest available tenths in the sport, which is why nations that drill landings obsessively, notably Japan and China on the men's side, consistently out-execute rivals with comparable difficulty.

Vault families

Every vault belongs to an entry family that determines its base value. The handspring family enters forward off two hands; the Tsukahara adds a quarter or half turn onto the table; the Yurchenko, invented by Natalia Yurchenko in the 1980s, uses a round-off onto the springboard and a back handspring onto the table and now underpins most elite women's vaulting. Within families, value climbs with saltos and twists: the Amanar is a Yurchenko with two and a half twists, the Cheng a half-on with one and a half twists off, and the Yurchenko double pike — competed by Simone Biles and named Biles II in 2023 — carries a 6.4 difficulty value. The Produnova, a front handspring into a double front tuck, is the notorious outlier: its value has been cut across successive codes precisely because gymnasts were attempting it without being able to land it.

All-around versus apparatus specialisation

The all-around title requires competence on every apparatus and is the sport's most prestigious individual prize; the apparatus finals reward extreme depth in one skill set. The economics differ sharply. An all-arounder must train four or six full routines, which caps the difficulty they can carry on any single one, while a pommel horse or rings specialist can pour every training hour into one apparatus and reach a difficulty no all-arounder can match. Specialists are also cheaper for a federation to produce, which is why smaller nations increasingly target apparatus medals: Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan on pommel horse and Armenia's Artur Davtyan on vault both won Olympic gold in Paris in 2024 without ever contesting an all-around final.

Team lineup strategy

The Olympic team final counts three scores per apparatus with no drop, so lineup order is a genuine tactical decision. Coaches typically lead off with their steadiest performer to put a clean score on the board and settle the group, place the weakest routine second when momentum is established, and anchor with the highest scorer, who is also the athlete best equipped to deliver under a known target. On beam, where falls cluster, some coaches invert this and lead with their best to remove pressure entirely. Qualification is a different game: four gymnasts compete and only three count, so a team can gamble on an upgraded routine there in a way it never would in the final.

Named elements

A gymnast who performs a genuinely new element successfully at a World Championships or Olympic Games, having submitted it to the technical committee in advance, has it entered into the Code of Points under their name. It must be performed in qualification and completed without a fall or major error. The honour is permanent and status-defining: Natalia Yurchenko, Yelena Produnova, Aliya Mustafina and Epke Zonderland all have skills carrying their names, and Simone Biles has five across vault, beam and floor. Naming is also a strategic act, since a gymnast who owns an element can build a D-score no rival has yet learned to copy.

Air awareness and the twisties

Twisting skills depend on a proprioceptive map of where the body is during rotation, built through thousands of repetitions and normally entirely automatic. When that map fails, a gymnast loses track of their position mid-air — the condition gymnasts call the twisties — and a routine that was safe becomes life-threatening, because landing a double salto on the head is a realistic outcome. It is not a failure of nerve; it is a neurological disconnection between intention and execution. Simone Biles's withdrawal from the Tokyo team final in 2021 made the condition public, and the sport's response — treating it as an injury requiring rehabilitation rather than a psychological weakness — has changed how federations manage risk.

How it evolved

The technical arc of gymnastics runs from strength to rotation. Early twentieth-century routines were dominated by static holds and simple swings; the introduction of sprung floors, foam pits and softer landing mats in the 1960s and 1970s made repeated somersaulting practice survivable, and difficulty exploded. Olga Korbut's backward flip on beam in 1972 was once considered reckless; today a beam routine without a full twisting layout is not competitive. The 2006 open-ended code accelerated the same process by removing the ceiling: gymnasts who once maximised cleanliness to protect a 10.0 start value now maximise content, and the sport has spent two decades arguing about whether that trade was worth making.

The current frontier is the limit of the human body rather than the rulebook. Women's vaulting has reached the Yurchenko double pike, men's high bar routines chain multiple releases, and floor tumbling has arrived at triple-twisting double somersaults. FIG has begun deliberately under-valuing the most dangerous skills to slow the arms race, an admission that difficulty inflation has a safety cost. Meanwhile execution is quietly becoming the differentiator again: with a dozen gymnasts able to build similar D-scores, championships are increasingly decided by tenths on landings and body line, which returns the sport, by a long detour, to what its judges were always meant to be measuring.
